Ahhhhh - the final days of August - the "dog days of summer". Labor Day weekend is here with plenty of opportunities to cook your favorites meats. We are fully stocked with ground beef, hot dogs and bratwurst for your grill. Ribeyes and New York Strips are in stock but don't wait to get yours - we have a minimal quantity - they tend to fly out the door!  And of course, Porterhouse, T-Bone and Top Sirloin are irresistible on the grill.  It's STILL BLT season so grab your lettuce and tomatoes from Shooting Star Farm and pick up 2 or 3 of your favorite bacon from us for that irresistible Summer treat. Even though it is summer we have all varieties of Beef and Pork Roasts and on hand. Our Stew Meat makes the perfect shish-ka-bob meat. Or how about some Beef Short Ribs and Pork Spare Ribs "falling-off-the-bone" slow cooked and covered in your favorite bbq sauce.  When you dine on Marr's Valley View Farms meats, rest assured you are eating naturally lean meats - fresh beef and pork products direct from a local farm to you.
If you are in need of a large quantity please place your order in advance. Send an e-mail to federman@charter.net or call 608-574-2899 by 5 p.m. Friday and we will have your order ready for pick-up at the Market. See you Saturday and don't forget the Iowa County Fair is on through Labor Day!

Shooting Star Farm
It’s been a wet August this year. Not so great for crops that suffer from fungal and bacterial diseases, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash. Thank goodness I have most of those crops in hoophouses as well as the field! The slicing tomatoes, heirlooms, and cherry tomatoes have peaked, but there are still plenty for Saturday. Those who asked for 20# cases of tomatoes last week can pick them up this week and (hopefully) next. The romas are ripening slowly, but will be available in larger quantities starting next week. Other items to look for this Saturday include bulk beets, kohlrabi (the smaller variety), napa cabbage, fennel bulbs, white onions, Italian bottle onions, sweet green peppers (bell and Italian), a few red and orange sweet peppers, eggplant (lavender and black), jalapeno peppers, shishito peppers (look these up!), kale (curly and lacinato), Swiss chard, red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, baby romaine and a few other baby types, arugula, salad mix (very limited due to weather-related lettuce damage), basil, cilantro, dill, thyme, oregano, and a bit of zucchini (nearly done for the season). The summer carrot crop is done, but more will be available in a few weeks. See you Saturday!
Sweet Earth Garden and Vintage China
Sweet Earth Gardens will be at the market on saturday with Dahlias, Cone Flowers, Zinnias, Daisies, Gerberas, Fall Hydrangeas, Alstroemeria and more.
Tippy Top Orchards
Mike is back at market this fall with pears and plums! Soon he will also have apples!
Wayne’s Woodworking and Engraving
I'm a small local woodworking shop specializing in a variety of handcrafted and engraved products. We will be displaying a variety of handcrafted cherry and butternut baskets, engraved wooden breadboards, rulers and key fobs. Moisture was fairly low in July, but August totals are more than sufficient thus far – with more on the way! We got 3.3” on Monday. Nothing near what some of my farmer friends experienced near Madison. Luckily I hadn’t gotten around to tilling in some cover crops, so my soil mostly stayed put – even on the steepest fields. What’s at Market this week? Lots and lots of variety! Large heads of romaine and red leaf lettuce, mixed baby lettuces including little gem, red oakleaf, green oakleaf, and red romaine, eggplant (3 types), Italian bottle onions, white onions, salad mix, possibly some arugula (it’s a little small right now), celery, bunched red beets, bunched carrots, napa cabbage, green bell peppers Italian frying peppers, a few red/orange sweet peppers, jalapeno peppers, summer squash (gold, green, and pattypan), cucumbers, cilantro, parsley, thyme, basil, cherry tomatoes (red, grape, sungold, and mixed pints), heirloom tomatoes, orange and red saladette tomatoes, large and small red slicing tomatoes, and roma/paste tomatoes. I will have specials on 10# or more of heirloom and red slicing tomatoes this week and for at least a few weeks to come. See you Saturday!

I remember the days when mid-August meant the bigger tomatoes were just starting to come in. Now that we grow many of them in an unheated hoophouse, tomato season starts at least two weeks sooner – even though hoophouse plants go in at the same time as field plants. We are bursting with cherry tomatoes, heirlooms, and saladette varieties this week. Lots of great red slicers, too. What goes great with tomatoes? Nearly everything else that’s ready this time of year! We’ll have eggplants, gold and green zucchini and pattypan squash, green bell peppers, sweet green Italian frying peppers, jalapeno peppers, Italian bottle onions, white onions, cilantro, basil, parsley, thyme, cucumbers (thin-skinned and regular slicing cukes), bulk beets (limited amount), bunched carrots, curly green kale and lacinato kale, Swiss chard, romaine lettuce, red leaf lettuce, baby lettuce heads of all kinds, salad mix, arugula, fennel, and celery. Marr's Valley View Farms
This summer we are in our 20th year of direct marketing our meats to the consumer. We started testing the waters with our Beef. The first package was sold at what was then known as the Mineral Point Farmers' Market.
All businesses face daily challenges and ours is no exception. In the mid to late 90's we discussed the need to make a change or stop farming like we were as 'the system' was working against us. We gave this 'new thing' known as direct marketing a try to diversify our farm sales and have control over a portion of our income; the rest is history. It wasn't easy, like everything else in farming it is a lot of hard work and long hours on top of long hours. Every person that purchased a package of meat from us over the years literally helped stabilize our family's 144 year old farm. We are so thankful and appreciative that you have stayed with us all these years.
But so many stories in agriculture don't have the same outcome. You may or may not be hearing about the life changing challenges in the agriculture industry today but this story that recently ran in a Chinese newspaper about my friend, her husband and the dairy farm that's been in his family for 100+ years tells the reality farmers everywhere are facing. They are dedicated, intelligent, hardworking people but the system is working against them just like so many others. This may be their final year: http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2018-08/02/c_137364501.htm.
One last favor - shop local! Please, please, please purchase as much as you can, whenever you can, directly from farmers and businesses starting with your vendors at the Mineral Point Market. It might just be the purchase that saves that farm or business.
From all of us at Marr's Valley View Farms - we extend a heartfelt THANK YOU! See you Saturday, under the Water Tower.

Wow, where is this summer going?!?  Hard to believe that it's August already.  I will not be at the market this weekend.  I will be spending the day with Holden at Cub Scout Day Camp.  I'm not sure who is more excited about it, him or me. :)  I am planning on being back at the market on August 11th with my cards and photos.  All of my cards are blank inside and can be used for any occasion, or keep then for yourself to enjoy! When I'm not at the market my cards are available at the Mineral Point Collection located at 151 High Street. Or feel free to visit my website at www.magiclightphotography.com or my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/mlp.michaeljsmith/
