July 30th - Week 13

Hello MP Market Goers!

Our fields are beginning to burst! It's that time of year when harvest becomes the main agenda. No longer can we worry about the weeds and for the most part the planting is complete (aside from a few things we plant in the fall). It's harvest time! Green beans are in abundance as well as tomatoes, peppers, onions and potatoes. I for one will be canning green beans now that my kitchen is a tad cooler. I'm also starting to think it's time to make salsa as I ran out in early spring forcing me to find inadequate salsa at the store (pout, pout).
I love that I am able to preserve the wonderful tastes of summer for my family knowing exactly where everything came from, who picked it, and who helped it grow throughout the season. Local markets are perfect for this! Getting to know your local vendors at the Mineral Point Market can put your mind at ease. Please join us in savoring the tastes of summer to be enjoyed year-round.

Here is a partial list of items at this week's market: Beef, Pork, Chicken, Eggs, Honey, Maple Syrup, Asparagus Soup, Green Beans, Potatoes, Sweet Cherries, Celery, Fresh Italian Bottle Onions, Fresh White Onions, Green Beans, Eggplant, Sweet Green Peppers, Tomatillos, Hot Peppers, Kohlrabi, Red and Green Cabbage, Beets, Carrots, Cucumbers, Cherry Tomatoes, Heirloom Tomatoes, Paste Tomatoes, Basil, Parsley, Cilantro, Dill, Lettuce, Arugula,Spicy Greens Mix , Watercolor paintings and artwork, Nature Prints, Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, Sunflower Oil, Perennial Plants, Yard Art, Coffee, Salsa, Jam, BBQ Sauce, Fresh Cut Flowers, and much more.   Come and check it all out!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Lacey's Lathers
To my market customers. I am sorry to say that I will not be back at market until august13th.Many of you are probably wondering what's going on or why I'm not at market. I have been recently working on completing a two-year Grant project for Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. I'm educating dairy goat producers, that teamed up with some extended family health issues has slowed down my attendance this year. I still have a significant amount of inventory so if you need any products when I'm coming to market and would like to place an order or make sure I have it feel free to call 6085 7498 tonight or email laceyslathers@yahoo.com. Clare
Magic Light Photography
I am planning on being at the market this weekend, weather permitting.  Once again I will have a selection of my nature and wildlife photography available as matted prints ready for framing as well as greeting cards and a book featuring over 80 of my favorite photos.  All of my cards are blank inside so they can be used for any occasion.  I have a couple of NEW photos that I captured over the winter that will be on display as well.  These new photos are printed on high gloss aluminum and are ready to hang, without any additional framing needed!  Along with the new prints, I also have some new cards.  I will also have an 11x17 poster of my most popular photograph, Bucky's Twins.  I'm no longer making photographic prints of this image so this is the next best way to get an enlarged copy of this photo at an affordable price and printed locally!  When I'm not at the market my cards are always available at the Mineral Point Collection located at 151 High Street.  New this year, I am going to be joining a group of artist at the High Street Gallery located at 33 High Street.  If I'm not at the market, a larger selection of my work will be available at the gallery, open Friday - Saturday from 10-5 and Sunday 11-4.  The gallery is currently under construction but progress is being made and we are hoping to be open by the first weekend in August.  You can also view my work at www.magiclightphotography.com and you can like and follow my work on Facebook.  My photos don't handle moister very well so I won't be at the market if there is rain in the forecast.  Thanks, Mike
Marr's Valley View Farms
We're officially into July Beef month in Wisconsin! We are fully stocked with ground beef patties and bratwurst for your weekend cookout! And of course, Tenderloin, New York Strip, Ribeye and Top Sirloin are irresistible on the grill. Feeding extra-hungry mouths - go for the "meal on it's own" Porterhouse or T-Bone steak.  Our Stew Meat makes the perfect shish-ka-bob meat. Or pick up a Beef roast and cut your own kabobs to your favorite size.  If you are like us, you are a lover of weekend family breakfasts that include bacon, pork sausage and ham.  Bone In and Boneless Butterflied Pork Chops are great grilling companions to our Beef products.  Or how about some Beef Short Ribs and Pork Spare Ribs "falling-off-the-bone" slow cooked and covered in your favorite BBQ Sauce?
If you're a Beef Tenderloin lover and enjoy grilling, here's a quick marinade recipe from our friends at Mad Dog and Merrill:
1 cup burgundy wine
1 cup Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup olive oil
4 cloves of garlic, mined
5 pounds of beef tenderloin whole or steaks
Mix wine, Worcestershire sauce, oil and garlic.  Marinate beef tenderloin in the mixture for at least 4 to 6 hours.  Before grilling, season the tenderloin with pepper.  Then grill over direct heat until desired doneness.

When you dine on Marr's Valley View Farms meats, rest assured you are eating naturally lean meats - fresh beef and pork products direct from a local farm to you.  If you need a large quantity - send an e-mail to federman@charter.net or call 608-574-2899 by Friday evening and we will have your order ready for pick-up at the market. Queen Bee Acres has sold out of honey for the season. Fran will be at the The Pear on August 6th for Gallery Night.  We are still in the planning stages but hope to have an observation hive available so folks can see the bees at work and a hive box to demonstrate a bit about beekeeping. Enjoy the Market, we will see you the second weekend of September.  Thank you for your understanding.  Pete & Fran Demo, Keepers of the Bees.  608-776-2188 or via email at queenbee@queenbeeacres.com

Shooting Star Farm
Thanks to everyone who came to last week’s market despite the threatening skies. We had to pack up nearly an hour early, but still had a good turnout. Later that day we had 3 ½ inches of rain at our place, along with some high winds. Some of the lettuces were damaged, but overall we feel fortunate to have gotten less than 5 inches of rain between the two storms. Looks like this sticky weather will finally be gone by Saturday, so come and enjoy a pleasant day at the Market. We’ve got tons of produce coming in this time of year. Here’s the anticipated list: celery, fresh Italian bottle onions, fresh white onions, green beans, eggplant, sweet green peppers, tomatillos, hot peppers, kohlrabi, red and green cabbage (nearly the end of them until fall), bulk beets, carrots, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, mixed heirloom tomatoes, a few red slicing and paste tomatoes, basil, parsley, cilantro, dill, lettuce (not as much), arugula, and spicy greens mix (no baby lettuce this week). That should do it. See you Saturday!  Rink, Jenny, and Charlie

Here is a list of the unconfirmed vendors that may or may not be at market this week:
Platteville Sunflower Oil Company
Sweet Earth Garden and Vintage China

If you are interested in being a vendor, contact Jenny Bonde at starfarm@mhtc.net or Lois Federman at federman@charter.net.

Mummu's Makeovers aka Susan Marr
Hi All!  I'm saying "Uncle" already!  This heat and humidity is waaay more than I can take.  So having said that, you will not be seeing me at Market this Sat. July 23.  Unless something miraculous should happen between now and then.....like a  major blizzard???  That would sound great to me about now.  But enough of that....I do have more doll clothes made so if you would like to come and shop at my house in Cobb, give me a call at 623-2592 and we can set up a time to do that.  Hope you all are doing ok in the heat and I hope to see you at July 30 Market.   Keep cool!  Mummu
Platteville Sunflower Oil Company
Hello Mineral Point Farmers market goers! We are pleased to announce that the Platteville Sunflower Oil Company will now be available to you this summer! We are a nonprofit organization that is almost completely ran by students at UW-Platteville. We don’t get any compensation for running this new small business other than the great work experience and meeting the many amazing people of southwest Wisconsin. Compared to some of the other vendors we are only going to retail Sunflower oil, and maybe the occasional brownie sample here and there! Our Sunflowers are grown with certified organic sunflower seeds from here in Wisconsin's Driftless Region by two local farmers, from there they go to a place north of Madison where it is cold pressed in bulk just to turn around and come back to Platteville where it is bottled by the UW-Platteville students. Sunflower oil is a healthy alternative to olive oil. It has a light nutty flavor that brings a unique and artisan taste to the many different baked goods, sautéed vegetables, and boiled/baked meats. By being locally grown it has less of a carbon footprint that can’t be said by other oils and name brands. Additionally, all profits from the sales of our oil help to fund sustainability and renewable energy related education and community engagement projects throughout southwestern Wisconsin. There will be one or more of our board members available this weekend that will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have for our organization or our Sunflower oil. We welcome you to stop by, see you Saturday!
Queen Bee Acres
Queen Bee Acres has sold out of honey for the season. The bees are busy making more!  Honey is harvested once per season and we will be harvesting the first part of September.  Look for us to be back at the Mineral Point Market by the second weekend of September with fresh honey and beeswax.  We will also have creamed honey!  The Pear in Mineral Point and Cobblestone Coffee in Dodgeville have limited sizes and quantities available.  We are sorry for any inconvenience but we are at the mercy of our little worker bees.

Shooting Star Farm
Hot, humid weather this week is making bean picking a less-than enjoyable experience. But we will have beans! A bit less than last week, but still good quantities. They taste great, too. New this week will be bunched carrots and celery. Our celery is darker green and more flavorful than California blanched celery. We prefer the taste, but you may need to use less if you’re trying it for the first time. Other items this week include: green peppers (limited supply), eggplant, cherry tomatoes, basil, mini white onions, red Italian bottle onions, cucumbers, zucchini and summer squash, green and red cabbages, kale,  broccoli, salad mix, arugula,, lettuces, dill, cilantro, and a few mixed salad and red tomatoes. That a lot of stuff! See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie

July 16th - Week 11

Hello MP Market Goers!

Congratulations Peter Schmalz winner of last week's market basket drawing! Your next chance to win is August 13th.
I can't believe we are already halfway through summer! It's the middle of July already! Wow! That being said we are starting to get to the really good stuff coming out of the gardens! Cherry Tomatoes, Peppers, Green Beans, and more! Yum!

A farmer's life is all about balance. It can be pretty tricky. There's the balance between harvesting/planting and getting the regular day to day chores done such as feeding the animals and maintaining their home. There's also the balance of family and a job that never ends because you live where you work. These can be huge challenges to a farmer but they are also what drive us to be farmers. The contrast between harvesting/planting and the regular day to day chores gives us the variety we crave which not only changes day to day but also season to season. Balancing family and the farm is also challenging but it gives us the opportunity to teach our children the benefits of hard work, where their food comes from, and they get to work alongside of us learning constantly. We are blessed. Thank you for supporting our farm families at the Mineral Point Market.

Here is a partial list of items at this week's market: Beef, Pork, Chicken, Eggs, Honey, Handmade Doll Clothes, Maple Syrup, Asparagus Soup, Green Beans, Potatoes, Raspberries, Eggplant, Peppers, Cherry Tomatoes, Broccoli, Cucumbers, Fennel, Kohlrabi, Zucchini, Mini White Onions, Scallions, Salad Mix, Arugula, Lettuces, Kale, Red Beets, Napa Cabbage, Red and Green Cabbages, Basil, Parsley, Dill, Watercolor paintings and artwork, Nature Prints, Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, Sunflower Oil, Perennial Plants, Yard Art, Coffee, Baked Goods, Bread, Salsa, Jam, BBQ Sauce, Fresh Cut Flowers, and much more.   Come and check it all out!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

I will not be at market this Saturday.  When I return I will once again have a selection of my nature and wildlife photography available as matted prints ready for framing as well as greeting cards and a book featuring over 80 of my favorite photos. Thanks, Mike

The bees are busy making more!  Honey is harvested once per season and we will be harvesting the first part of September.  Look for us to be back at the Mineral Point Market by the second weekend of September with fresh honey and beeswax.  We will also have creamed honey!  The Pear in Mineral Point and Cobblestone Coffee in Dodgeville have limited sizes and quantities available.  We are sorry for any inconvenience but we are at the mercy of our little worker bees.

July 9th - Week 10

Hello MP Market Goers!

Oof dah! What a storm we had Tuesday night! Fortunately, it didn't do too much damage here. Beans got knocked down a bit and our sweet corn got a little tipsy but other than that the moisture was greatly appreciated. Hopefully, Mineral Point fared well in the storm? And now we are getting more rain. Thankfully, most of our crops are closing canopy (the process in which a crop grows to hide all the uncovered ground) so that the weeds this rain inspires will not have the sunlight they need to grow big and strong.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! This week is your chance to sign up and win one of our fabulous market baskets! Each month we have a market basket drawing and the person that wins gets a great box of goodies from all your favorite vendors at the Mineral Point Market! Be sure to sign up Saturday!

I'm not sure if you've noticed but the Pointer Pantry has been selling coffee up at the market this season. The money they raise goes to help students during the summer months with food costs. So come on up to market, grab a cup of Joe, a scone and enjoy your time with friends up at the Mineral Point Market!

Here is a partial list of items at this week's market: Beef, Pork, Chicken, Eggs, Honey, Handmade Doll Clothes, Maple Syrup, Asparagus Soup, Green Beans, Potatoes, Raspberries, Broccoli, Napa Cabbage, Pearl Onions, Scallions, Kale, Collard Greens, Sugar Snap Peas, Zucchini, Summer Squash, Cucumbers, Dill Weed, Parsley, Basil, Lettuce, Arugula, Mixed Greens, Watercolor paintings and artwork, Nature Prints, Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, Sunflower Oil, Perennial Plants, Yard Art, Coffee, Baked Goods, Bread, Salsa, Jam, BBQ Sauce, Fresh Cut Flowers, and much more.   Come and check it all out!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Hi All!  Summer seems to be back this week.  Hope you all made it through the storm on Tues. nite with no damage.  I'm into my second week without Giada (and, yes, I am going into withdrawal!!) but on the plus side I have been able to do lots of sewing.  The dolls in Mineral Point (and others whose "moms" shop at Market) will be very nicely dressed!  I do plan to be at Market this Sat. July 9.  It sounds like this humidity should be gone by then and another lovely day will be here.  If you need a gift (or just want to shop for your own doll) and won't be at Market, do give me a call at 623-2592 and we can set up a time for you to come to Cobb and shop at my house.  If you are at Market, do stop by and say "Hi" and check out the new creations!!  And don't forget to support our local beef farmers.....every day, but especially during July Beef Month!!    Mummu

Shooting Star Farm
Hope everyone had a great 4th of July with family and friends. It was a beautiful weekend all around. The big storms that came through the area early Wednesday did hit us, be we were spared the worst of it. Our crops are still standing (thank goodness). Just a few shredded leaves from wind and rain. Everything should recover fine. On to the crops! Cherry tomatoes will be coming soon. Maybe a teaser or two for this weekend. The plants are loaded but need a bit more time to ripen. We will have a new crop of broccoli as well as red and green cabbage this weekend. Other items include napa cabbage, pearl onions, scallions, kale, collard greens, sugar snap peas, zucchini and summer squash, cucumbers, dill weed (dill with the tops for pickling), parsley, basil (lots), and a nice variety of lettuce. For a variety of reasons we’ve been short of salad mix this season, but it looks like we should have some arugula and hopefully some mixed greens for the weekend. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie
