May 28th - Week 4

Hello MP Market Goers!

It's Memorial Day Weekend and we are so grateful for all the sacrifices that have been made for us to enjoy this great country that we live in. These sacrifices provide us with the opportunity to enjoy our friends and families, which is what we will be doing this weekend. The grill will be going and games will be played. There will probably be a bonfire with s'mores too!
Spring is such a busy time for farmers. Everything needs to get planted in a timely fashion plus some crops are ready for harvest. Other crops need to be monitored closely so that they will grow and be fruitful. But a day off is needed.
If you'd like to honor those who have fought for your freedom, please join us for a parade down High St at 10:30 with a ceremony in Library Park immediately following.

Happy Memorial Day!

I am planning on being at the market this weekend, weather permitting.  Once again I will have a selection of my nature and wildlife photography available as matted prints ready for framing as well as greeting cards and a book featuring over 80 of my favorite photos.  All of my cards are blank inside so they can be used for any occasion.  I have a couple of NEW photos that I captured over the winter that will be on display as well.  These new photos are printed on high gloss aluminum and are ready to hang, without any additional framing needed!  Along with the new prints, I also have some new cards.  I will also have an 11x17 poster of my most popular photograph, Bucky's Twins.  I'm no longer making photographic prints of this image so this is the next best way to get an enlarged copy of this photo at an affordable price and printed locally!  When I'm not at the market my cards are always available at the Mineral Point Collection located at 151 High Street.  New this year, I am going to be joining a group of artist at the Hight Street Gallery located at 33 High Street.  If I'm not at the market, a larger selection of my work will be available at the gallery, open Friday - Saturday from 10-5 and Sunday 11-4.  The gallery is currently under construction but we hope to be opening soon.  You can also view my work at www.magiclightphotography.com and you can like and follow my work on Facebook.  My photos don't handle moister very well so I won't be at the market if there is rain in the forecast.  Thanks, Mike

Platteville Sunflower Oil Company
Hello Mineral Point Farmers market goers! We are pleased to announce that the Platteville Sunflower Oil Company will now be available to you this summer! We are a nonprofit organization that is almost completely ran by students at UW-Platteville. We don’t get any compensation for running this new small business other than the great work experience and meeting the many amazing people of southwest Wisconsin. Compared to some of the other vendors we are only going to retail Sunflower oil, and maybe the occasional brownie sample here and there! Our Sunflowers are grown with certified organic sunflower seeds from here in Wisconsin's Driftless Region by two local farmers, from there they go to a place north of Madison where it is cold pressed in bulk just to turn around and come back to Platteville where it is bottled by the UW-Platteville students. Sunflower oil is a healthy alternative to olive oil. It has a light nutty flavor that brings a unique and artisan taste to the many different baked goods, sautéed vegetables, and boiled/baked meats. By being locally grown it has less of a carbon footprint that can’t be said by other oils and name brands. Additionally, all profits from the sales of our oil help to fund sustainability and renewable energy related education and community engagement projects throughout southwestern Wisconsin. There will be one or more of our board members available this weekend that will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have for our organization or our Sunflower oil. We welcome you to stop by, see you Saturday!
Queen Bee Acres
We will be at market this Saturday, May 28 and again in 2 weeks on June 11th. We plan to be at market about twice per month throughout the summer, Out honey supply is low until fall harvest. Watch the newsletter, our schedule will be posted there. Queen Bee Acres honey is also available locally at The Pear on Fountain St in Mineral Point and The Cobblestone Coffee House on Iowa St. in Dodgeville. Queen Bee Acres feature local honey from Iowa and Lafayette counties, as well as creamed honey and sweet smellin golden beeswax bars. Beeswax has a variety of uses, for example craft projects, wood working, waterproofing, making cosmetics, thread conditioning, and for lubrication or polishing. We look forward to seeing you! Pete & Fran Demo, Keepers of the Bees www.queenbeeacres.com
Rustics at Ridge
Take a look this week at our hand crafted items including candleholders, centerpieces, chalk boards, ladders, tables, plant stands, stichery, and more.  Custom orders available.  For more information, stop in at Ridge Lumber or check out our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ridgelumbermp/.
Shooting Star Farm
Busy, busy week here getting all the summer crops in before the much-needed rain. Things in the field are starting to grow like mad, but the selection is still decidedly spring-like! We’ll have plenty of greens this week. Heads of lettuce will include green butter, red butter, oak leaf, baby romaine, and lots of mixed small heads. We’ll finally have plenty of salad mix and arugula. Also look for red and French breakfast radishes, salad turnips, bok choy, spinach, cilantro, dill, rhubarb, a bit of green garlic, and maybe a few surprises if we get some rain! We have mostly sold out of tomato plants, but will bring some if we have them. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie
Sweet Earth Garden and Vintage China
Sweet Earth Gardens will not be at the market either May 14th or May 21rst.  But will look forward to being back on May 28th

May 21st - Week 3

Hello MP Market Goers!

Well last week was certainly one of our colder markets! Brr! Thank goodness this Saturday is looking much more promising! It even looks like it will be nice enough to stay awhile, have a breakfast roll, and catch up with friends!
One of the first items out of the garden is rhubarb, which there will be plenty of this week at market. Why not try something new with this wonderful tart dessert crop? Here's a new recipe that we will be trying at the Patch! Rhubarb Bars, like lemon bars but with the tartness of rhubarb.

This Saturday, volunteers from the Mineral Point Elementary School will be selling compost and cookbooks to raise funds for “The Garden Project”. All proceeds – that’s 100% - will go directly to the project for seeds, supplies, and continued maintenance.
Compost: This compost is sourced from Purple Cow. It’s specially formulated with worm castings, kelp, and other goodies which your garden veggies and flowers will love. It’s the “good stuff”! Compost is bagged by us in approximately 1 cubic foot quantities. Price is comparable to what you’d pay at a garden center.
Cookbooks: Super Snack for Super Kids, is written by local authors Dr. Sarah Fox and Julie Stephenson. The cookbook is full of great recipes for healthful, delicious, kid-approved snacks, and features lots of local super kids. Books are $18.95 each - all of which will be donated to the garden.

The Garden Project was started in 2013 in collaboration with the Mineral Point School District and parent volunteers. It gives all elementary students an opportunity to plant seeds, get in the garden, and eat the veggies that they have grown. If you haven’t been to the garden, visit https://www.facebook.com/MineralPointSchoolGarden/ for photos and updates. Let us know if you’d like to volunteer!

Here is a partial list of items at this week's market:  Beef, Pork, Chicken, Eggs, Cheese, Asparagus, Honey, Beeswax Bars, Maple Syrup, Frozen Sweet Corn, Asparagus Soup, Dilly Beans, Rhubarb, Arugula, Bok Choy, Spinach, Cilantro, Salad Mix, Turnips, Baby Lettuce, Radishes, Watercolor paintings and artwork, Sunflower Oil, Perennial Plants, Yard Art, Baked Goods, Bread, and much more.   Come and check it all out!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

This week Bratwurst are here in all their glory!  In Pork we'll have Cheddar Cheese, Chipotle-Ranch, Classic and Kraut-Onion.  Mushroom-Swiss will be back before Memorial Day.  We also offer a Classic Beef Bratwurst.  We have already put some on the grill.  It's amazing how great the first ones of the season taste.
Speaking of taste - have you ventured out and tried any of our Bacon varieties lately?  Maple and Pepper Crusted will give you that morning "wake-up call".  We have Applewood, Hickory (your favorite!) and Uncured as well.  Ask us about "Bacon Ends".  They are exactly what you think - the end trimmings already cut up for you to use anywhere you like bacon.  Top your German Potato Salad or sprinkle it on your Maple Frosted Donuts!  We were in downtown Cincinnati recently and had a Maple-Bacon Donut that was to die for.
Reminder to try the new products we introduced at the opening Market - both perfect for the grill or any other method of cooking you prefer:
Boneless Ham - 4 to 5 pounds each

Marr's Valley View Farms
It was so good to see everyone last Saturday.  It was a strong opening day at the Mineral Point Market.
May is BEEF Month.  Why not celebrate with some Marr's Valley View Farms steaks on the grill.  Choose from NY Strip, Ribeye, Top Sirloin, Tenderloin or T-Bone.  We have limited quantities of Flank and Porterhouse so come early if those on are your shopping list.
Here's some tips for preparing juicy, tender beef steaks:
- let beef steaks thaw naturally in the refrigerator - thawing in the microwave doesn't do tenderness any favors
- pat beef steaks dry with paper towels for better browning
- sear beef steaks on both sides making sure your grill or pan are nice and hot sealing in the natural juices - you want to hear that "sizzle" on contact
- turn beef steaks with tongs - a fork pierces the beef allowing loss of flavorful and moisturizing juices
- salt beef steaks after cooking or browning - salt draws out moisture and inhibits browning
- let beef steaks "rest" for 5 minutes before serving
In addition, Marr's Valley View Farms will have our full offering of our products - everything from our lean Ground Beef to Ham Roasts to Bratwursts to Pork Chops to all your favorite Beef Roasts. If you need a large quantity or just want to pre-order for pick-up at market, e-mail your order to federman@charter.net by 5:00 pm on Friday night. It is never to early to place your pre-order for that special graduation party or Memorial weekend cookouts. We are excited to be returning for another season at the Mineral Point Market.  Featured at the Queen Bee Acres booth will be local honey from Iowa and Lafayette counties, as well as creamed honey and sweet smelling golden beeswax bars.  Beeswax has a variety of uses, for example craft projects, wood working, waterproofing, making cosmetics, thread conditioning,  and for lubrication or polishing.  Unfortunately honey supplies are low until the fall harvest in early September so we will not be at market every weekend.   We will be there opening day and the first three Saturdays in May.  Please check the Mineral Point newsletter for our availability throughout the summer.  Remember our honey is also available locally at The Pear on Fountain St. in Mineral Point and The Cobblestone Coffee House on Iowa St. in Dodgeville

It was great to see familiar faces as well as some new folks at the first Market last week. The Uplands Garden Club plant sale takes place this Saturday morning at Harris Park. As one who knows, be sure to shop early for a good selection. Then head back to Mineral Point for the Market. We’ll be waiting for you! This is our hopeful list of veggies for the week: red and French breakfast radishes, spinach, rhubarb, bok choy, baby arugula and/or spicy greens mix (salad mix sans the lettuce part), cilantro, parsley, and a limited number of baby lettuce heads and salad turnips. Looks like ramps might be done for the season. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie

Bures Berry Patch
Wow, we had a wonderful winter filled with family, friends, and good food; food that we preserved from last season to get us through the winter.  Soon we will start that process over again.  We will be harvesting delicious food from the Patch to eat both fresh and preserved for next winter.  And it's already beginning! Our asparagus is jumping out of the ground and has been so tasty with dinner. This week at market we will have asparagus, farm fresh eggs, pure maple syrup, pure local honey, frozen sweet corn, and our dilly beans.  Please check our website for hours and availability. Like us on Facebook or signup for our e-newsletter to get the latest shovel on what’s happening in the Patch!  Hope to see you in the Patch or at market soon! Kathy, Ed, Abby, and Ben
Magic Light Photography
Welcome back to another great year at the Market!  I am planning on being at the market this weekend. These new photos are printed on high gloss aluminum and are ready to hang, without any additional framing!  I will also have an 11x17 poster of my most popular photograph, Bucky's Twins.  I'm no longer making photographic prints of this image so this is the next best way to get an enlarged copy of this photo at an affordable price and printed locally!  My photos don't handle moister very well so I won't be at the market if there is rain in the forecast. You can also view my work at www.magiclightphotography.com.   Thanks, Mike

Hopefully Saturday will be a beautiful day to welcome in the 2016 Market season.  See you under the Water Tower - all of us at Marr's Valley View Farms.

Shooting Star Farm
Holy Cow it’s May 2016! Seems like the last Market was only a few months ago. We’re excited to get going again this year, and will have a few fresh veggies for sale at this first Market. Looks like radishes, cilantro, baby bok choy, rhubarb, wild harvested ramps (wild leeks), and a limited supply of baby lettuce heads. Planting this year was almost 2 weeks later than 2015 due to the very wet ground back in April spring. Our fields are filling up now, but we want to let you know that crops will be later coming in than last year. We’ll bring everything we have and keep coddling those veggies along, and before you know it, we’ll have lots of variety. We’re looking forward to seeing you this weekend! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie.
