June 30th - Week 9

Hello MP Market Goers!

The 4th of July is just about here, will you be grilling? With the heat that's predicted I will be, whew. So what are our options? Steak, chops, brats, burgers, hot dogs, chicken? Here's a great link with some tasty ideas from grilled kabobs to honey soy pork chops to grilled skirt steak, I want to try them all! Who's with me?

In all actuality, I'll be in Soldiers Park watching our daughter play softball on the 4th. So we'll be packing the beef sticks, sugar snap peas, cucumbers, kohlrabi, and carrots for quick snacks. And we'll be relying on the Steak Sandwich Lunch .... with Live Music by the Al Bauman Band from Noon - 2:00 in Water Tower Park and the Kiwanis Ice Cream and Pie Social ... 6 pm at Soldiers Memorial Park. Yum! Guess I'll have to grill Saturday and Sunday and maybe even Monday?

What will you be doing this weekend and 4th of July? And what will you need from the Mineral Point Market to make it a delicious and happy celebration?
Have a Happy 4th of July!

Not record amounts by any stretch, but we’re good for a while, really good, and the fall crops need to go in soon. Here’s what we’re harvesting for Market this week: green cabbage, napa cabbage, big kohlrabi (the “kossack” variety), curly and lacinato kale, Swiss chard, spinach (small amount), green leaf and green romaine lettuces, red oak leaf lettuce, mixed baby lettuces, salad mix, baby arugula, carrots (bulk – no tops), bunched beets, cucumbers, garlic scapes, dill, oregano, tarragon, basil, broccoli (the first heads), a few sugar snap peas (the wet is doing them in), and red radishes if they can size up in time! Stay cool and see you Saturday!

Sugar Snap peas, cucumbers, and carrots, for starters. Sounds like the beginning of summer! The rest of the table will be filled with lots of beautiful big and small lettuce heads, salad mix, baby arugula, scallions, radishes, kale, Swiss chard, some small kohlrabi, a few beets (between patches), garlic scapes, cilantro, dill, oregano, and basil. Shooting Star Farm
So April set us back by a few weeks with its cold weather; then May got us back on track; and June has been propelled us a bit ahead. What a wacky season so far! The sugar snap peas are just beginning to ripen, so I will have a medium-sized harvest for Saturday. As promised, I’ll be digging carrots from the hoophouse, too. There should be plenty of mid-sized bunched carrots on the table. Cucumbers are beginning to set (also in the hoophouse). Come early if you want a few. Many more will be ready for next week. Also look for garlic scapes. This curly portion of the garlic plant will eventually turn into a flower, but when harvested young makes a terrific substitute for traditional garlic cloves. Use it in pesto, soup, pickles, or anywhere you want a garlic flavor without too much heat. Here’s the rest of the line-up: salad mix, arugula, lots of lettuce – including big heads of romaine, kale (2 types), Swiss chard, scallions, napa cabbage, basil tops, radishes (not a huge amount), possibly spinach, oregano, dill, and hopefully some cilantro. See you Saturday!
Sweet Earth Garden and Vintage China
Sweet Earth Gardens will be at the market on saturday with Peonies, Asiatic Lillies, Spiderwort, Gerberas, Alstroemeria and Lupines.

June 9th - Week 6

Hello MP Market Goers!

Well, it was a pretty chilly Saturday last week and it certainly came as quite a shock to some. I even came prepared with a coat and I was still on the chilly side. Fortunately, this Saturday looks to be the perfect amount of heat with a bit of cloud cover mixed in.
This week instead celebrating the arts in Mineral Point, Mineral Point is celebrating 150 years of Orchard Lawn and its beautiful gardens and architecture. Join the party Friday night; grab a wood fired pizza from Cress Springs and a scoop of Babcock Ice Cream, and listen to some fabulous music!
But don't stay out too late or you might just miss the good stuff at market Saturday morning! And if you don't make it at all you'll miss your chance to win our market basket giveaway! Cathy T. won last month, will you be our winner this month? Good luck and have a great weekend!

Here is a partial list of items at this week's market:
Breakfast Sandwiches, Beef, Pork, Bacon, Poultry, Eggs, Lettuce, Spinach, Scallions, Basil, Arugula, Salad Mix, Red Beets, Napa Cabbage, Kale, Swiss Chard, Cilantro, Dill, Oregano, Kohlrabi, Salad Turnips, Asparagus, Rhubarb, Frozen Cream of Asparagus Soup, Dilly Beans, Decorative Glass Block, Ceramic Tiles & Wine Bottles, Cards, Gift Boxes, Scones, Muffins, Cookies, Bars, Cupcakes, Brownies, Fresh Cut Flowers, Honey, Maple Syrup, Wildlife Prints and Cards, Coffee Beans, Coffee, Massage Chair, and much more.   Come and check it all out!

Farmer's Daughters
Hello everyone! I hope you are all enjoying the nice weather! The hay is baled, picked up and covered; now we're ready for a bit of rain to bring up the pasture padfocks and second crop hay.
For Dairy Month, a bit of history on our families' farm. We are KamLin Organic Krossbreds. Brian and I have been milking on our own for 12 years, and we both grew up on dairy farms. Our herd of 40 cows are mostly crossbred cows; Holstein, Jersey, Normande, Shorthorn and Brown Swiss. They are a grain free herd, and spend all day during grazing season doing just that - grazing! We are member/owners of Organic Valley, and always will be. We thank everyone for their support of not only our family farm, but for the whole dairy industry!
This week at market, I will have S'mores Brownies again! Many of you have asked for them, and I am more than happy to oblige! Also we will have Cherry Cheesecake, hand pies (TBD), and cupcakes! Hope to see you Saturday!
James Pine Valley Farm

Magic Light Photography
Brrr, it was chilly at the market last weekend but this week is looking much warmer.  I am planning on being back at the market this Saturday, weather permitting.  If you are looking for a special photograph for Father's Day, this is the week to get it as I am not planning on being back at the Market until June 30th as I will be out of town the next 2 weekends for a kayaking trip and the Spring Green Art Fair.  This week I will have a few new photos of a fox kit family that I photographed earlier this Spring the are super cute!  I will also have my cards as well as several other matted prints that are ready to hang.  My cards are all blank inside and can be used for any occasion.  When I'm not at the market my cards are available at the Mineral Point Collection located at 151 High Street.  Or feel free to visit my website at www.magiclightphotography.com or my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/mlp.michaeljsmith/

Mummu's Makeovers
HI All!!  I finally made it to Market last week and loved being back.  I certainly couldn't say the weather was "too hot" and I did enjoy the coolness.  It's still that Upper Michigan in my blood, I guess.  It was so nice to see many familiar faces and lots of new ones!  I've had a busy winter making lots of new creations for the dolls.  For those of you that may be new to me, I make clothes and accessories for 18" dolls (American Girl size).  All of my things are one-of-a-kind so your doll won't "meet herself coming down the street".  In addition to dresses, leggings, T tops, PJ's, etc.,etc. I do many Badger, Packer, Brewers, and  Pointer items.  So do stop by and say "Hi" as I do plan to be at Market this Sat. June 9, weather permitting, (and it does sound good as I write this on Wed.)    See you there!!    Mummu        PS....don't forget to thank a dairy farmer especially during June Dairy Month.   And do support them year round!

Shooting Star Farm
School’s out and Market is in full swing! The story this week is lettuce! Yes, I know everyone is ready for some summer vegetables, but this is typically the time of year the big, beautiful heads of lettuce are ready. And I will certainly have some this week: green romaine, red leaf, red oak leaf, green leaf, and green oak leaf. Plus a lot of baby lettuces (on the bigger side, but still tender and delicious). Spinach looks great again this week. A few new items include bunched scallions, fresh basil tops, and possibly the first baby carrots from the hoophouse. Also lots of really nice arugula, salad mix, red beets (limited), napa cabbage, kale, Swiss chard, cilantro, dill, oregano, a few small kohlrabi (more in a week or two), salad turnips, and possibly French breakfast radishes. Everyone wanted radishes last week, but I lost an big planting due to the heat over Memorial weekend. Radishes hate heat! More are growing, but the new crop of red ones need another week.  See you Saturday!
Sweet Earth Garden and Vintage China
