Week 13 - July 28th

Hello MP Market Goers!

My words came true!  The rain we had last week did plump up the sweet corn, ripen the green beans, and juice up the tomatoes!  This weeks lineup of products looks to be delicious!  What's even better is that Saturday promises to be absolutely gorgeous!
In addition to market there are lots of fun things happening around town this weekend.  Shake Rag Alley is having a family fun day on Saturday!  My daughter Abby has been there all week working on art projects and having lots of fun.  The event starts at 1 pm and goes until 5 pm. In addition, Set in Stone is hosting Travis Phillips from 8 pm to 10 pm.  Come on down and listen to him sing his eclectic repertoire of jazz, folk, and 40s & 50s swing time music.  Also, happening this weekend is the Cowboy Country Church.  This sounds like something right up my daughters alley, she is already vying for a horse.
Lots to do this weekend in Mineral Point, so start your weekend at the Mineral Point Market then see where the fun takes you from there.

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Carey's Green House
My name is Delbert Carey and I was born and raised in Mineral Point.  I have many annuals that can be used in both container gardens and traditional growing spaces. Because of my time at Pendarvis, English garden favorites such as lilacs, hollyhocks, and hostas are also favorites of mine. I taught pre-school for eight years and learned just how much fun kids can have growing sunflowers and pumpkins. Finally I’ve always had a weakness for climbing vines such as morning glories and moon flowers.
My parents have enjoyed joining in on this little project and they helped me choose the name Carey’s Green House which is an inside joke. After forty-six years of living in the same white house, last summer my parents decided to paint the whole thing Green, and thus the bulk of my plants come from Carey’s green house. All of the plants we offer for sale are either annuals grown naturally from seeds or perennials that are either grown from seeds or grown from cuttings of plants that have grown in my parents gardens for the last 46 years.
I hope to see you all at the market!

Week 12 - July 21st

Hello MP Market Goers!

Wow, how good it feels to have rain!  We have been waiting for this for what seems like forever.  As you'll notice from some of the vendors' comments however; even though we have finally had some rain it may not be enough to rescue their crops.
While it seems as though nothing could grow in this weather, many of the vendors have invested in irrigation systems to support their crops in times of water deficiencies...that being said nothing beats a real rain, we got 1.75"!  That should plump up the sweet corn, ripen the green beans, and make those tomatoes extra juicy!

So come on out and enjoy the Mineral Point Market and all its bounty!
We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Magic Light Photography
I hope everyone is staying cool in this hot weather.  I will not be at the market this weekend.  Instead I will be displaying a large selection of framed and matted photographs, cards and bookmarks at the Mount Horeb Art Fair right on Main St. in Mount Horeb.  There are going to be about 150 artists with works on display.  It would make a great road trip for this weekend, after you visit the market on Saturday of course!  The art fair runs from 9-5 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday.  I will not be at the market on the 28th either as I will be displaying a large selection of my work at The Art Fair on the Green on the UW-Lacrosse campus.  This art fair runs from 10-5 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday.  I plan on being back at the market with my prints, cards and bookmarks the first weekend of August.  If you need to pick up something special before then, my cards and bookmarks will be available Monday - Friday at the Mineral Point Collection on Hight St. in Mineral Point, or feel free to contact me directly.  You can find all of my contact information on my website:  www.magiclightphotography.com.  See you in August!
Marr's Valley View Farms
I'm writing this late Wednesday afternoon while listening to the possibility of receiving some rain tonight.  Madison had a nice rain this morning - hopefully this evening it will be our turn with many more to follow.  This is the worst drought our generation has seen on our family farm.
Many farmers are considering selling part or all of their herds including all types of livestock from beef to dairy to hogs to sheep.  The challenge is that the drought is so far spread, feed may just not be available for purchase regardless of whether or not you have the money to do so.  Most of our corn fields are past saving but we have 2 that still have a chance of making something if we get rain now....so do your rain dance, say your rain prayers and let's get the faucet turned on!
We will be at Market this week with our full line of beef and pork products.  A reminder that it's July Beef Month and we have all the BEEF you need and more! If you need a large quantity or just want to pre-order for pick-up at market, e-mail your order to federman@charter.net by 5:00 p.m. on Friday night. We are offering pick-up of our Meat CSA at market this year - ask us on Saturday for details and how to join.  See you soon - Mike - Lois - Doral
Matchbook Magnets
The storm Friday evening before market last week was certainly welcome, but waking up to a flashing alarm clock and not having enough time to set up was not!  So I will be at the market this week with my handcrafted magnets.  They are made using images from matchbooks my Dad collected during the golden age of matchbook advertising – the 1940s thru early 1960s.  Some are funny, many are colorful and others are poignant.  They will brighten your kitchen, office or workshop and are a unique and personal gift for any special occasion.  Email:  matchbookmagnets@yahoo.com  See you Saturday!  Cindy

P & M Gardens
We will not be at the market this week because of the heat.  Hoping the heat is gone next week!  If there is a plant that you are thinking about let me know. With the heat the way it is I don't recommend recommend planting or digging any plants.  If it is potted just water and wait until the weather has cooled and we have received some rain.
Shooting Star Farm
It’s Wednesday night and we are experiencing our first measurable rainfall since Memorial weekend. Hurray! A bit fast and furious for my taste, but who’s complaining? It’ll be nice to turn the irrigation off for a day or two. This week’s selection will include cherry tomatoes, red slicing tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, a few eggplants and peppers (just getting started), zucchini, kale, Swiss chard, a limited amount of salad mix, green beans, beets, baby fennel, and baby romaine lettuce (this will be the only lettuce available). Although our selection at is a bit down due to the extreme heat and drought, we appreciate your understanding and continued support.  See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie
Turtle Hill Wilds
Turtle Hill Wilds will be at market this Saturday with a selection of this year's honey harvest!  Made form spring and early summer flowers, the honey is derived primarily from the nectars of berry flowers, tree flowers, and spring and summer wildflowers.  Take some home with you this Saturday.  Also on our table will be strawberry-rhubarb jam, very berry and bramble berry jam, and a grape jelly made from tame and wild grapes.  All of our preserves are sweetened with honey, a uniquely and pleasant change to sweet sugar jams.

Other vendors included in the market:
Papa Bob will be at market this week, thank goodness it has cooled down a bit!
Badger Hollow Scents will be back again this week with their homemade soy candles.

Matchbook Magnets
I am excited to be back at the market this week with my handcrafted magnets.  They are made using images from matchbooks my Dad collected during the golden age of matchbook advertising – the 1950s thru early 1960s.  Some are funny, many are colorful and others are poignant.  I love hearing the stories about why a magnet reminds you of someone special or of a memory stirred.  Email:  matchbookmagnets@yahoo.com  See you Saturday!  Cindy
Mission Abolition
Mission Abolition will be at market this week.  Mission Abolition creates schlep bags made from donated fabrics, which brings unique color and pattern designs to each bag.  All proceeds from the sales of these bags are donated to the Not For Sale organization, which works to end human trafficking and modern-day slavery.  Mission Abolition believes in raising awareness of the needs of people involved in human trafficking and modern-day slavery with a personal touch sewn into each bag.
Right now anything below 90 degrees seems relatively cool to us, and since Saturday looks to be relatively cool, come on out to the market! Last week we had our first cherry tomatoes from the hoophouse. We hope to have many more pints this weekend from both the hoophouse and field. Varieties include a mix of red (grape and round), as well as sungolds. We’ll have a small supply of red tomatoes, and a larger selection of heirloom tomatoes (again, from the hoophouse). We may even have a few green peppers. Despite the heat, we will have lettuce – red bibb, baby romaine, and possibly a few others. We’ll also have salad mix and baby arugula. Other items include zucchini, basil, bulk beets, a few cucumbers (pests are horrible this year!), fennel, kale, and our first green beans of the season.  See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny and Charlie
Turtle Hill Wilds
Turtle Hill Wilds will not be at market this weekend.  Look for us next weekend!

Week 10 - July 7th

Hello MP Market Goers!

We hope everyone had wonderful Independence Day celebrations!  We took a trip to the lake for a day of swimming, whew that felt good.  We also decided that we had better watch the Madison fireworks on TV for fear that we might not see any this year with all the dry weather cancelations.  For the rest of the holiday weekend we plan on heading to the Farmers’ Appreciation Day Parade and barbeque on Sunday in Dodgeville.
What a week this has been, I cannot not talk about the weather.  Whew, it has been so hot out.  At the Patch we have our water running just about every morning and evening to keep the plants cool and growing.  Our sweet corn and pumpkins are grateful.  It is a striking difference though on the lawn and everywhere else.  I drove up north to the Twin Cities last weekend and it took until about Mauston before I started to see live vegetation.  And when one gets way up north there is flooding and too much rain.  A fellow grower friend of ours had to stop picking his strawberries early because the crop got too wet, argh.  All in all though things are moving right along, albeit about two weeks ahead of schedule.
This week is market basket giveaway!  Be sure to sign up for your chance to win a basket full of goodies from all your favorite vendors.  It is just one way for us to say thank you for your commitment to buying local products from your market vendors!  Thanks everyone!

So come on out and enjoy the Mineral Point Market and all its bounty!
We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Jeani and Pat Heisz own and operate the home business Head 2 Toe.  Jeani began dabbling in making therapeutic oil blends when trying to develop several natural oil blends for her nail and massage clients.
