June 1st - Week 5

Hello MP Market Goers!

Saturday it will be June officially and I sure hope the weather cooperates! I for one am ready to see May in the rear view mirror! We are ready for some sun and heat, as are the crops in the field and the animals in the pasture.
Each week at market we will be marching through the seasons. New items will be coming out of the fields and new vendors will be arriving at market. Be sure when you are at market this week to walk all throughout so you don't miss something great (hint - Alaskan Salmon is back this week). Also be sure to read on so that you can plan your shopping and menu for the week according to what will be at market this week (maybe a rhubarb crisp to go with your salmon).

Here is a partial list of items at this week's market:
Beef, Pork, Bacon, Eggs, Bunched Beets, Kohlrabi, Lettuce Heads, Bok Choy, Green Garlic, Salad Mix, Oregano, Cilantro, Spinach, Rhubarb, Tomato Plants, Asparagus, Dilly Beans, Maple Syrup, Honey, Croissants, Breakfast Sandwiches, Beautifully Designed Flower Bouquets, Coffee, Sweet and Savory Baked Goods, Watercolor Paintings, Prints, and Cards, Alaskan Seafood, Chair Massages, Wood Crafts, Kids Activities, and much more. Come and check it all out!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday in Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

May 28th was National Burger Day – even though it’s gone by, we think EVERY DAY is Burger Day! Here’s some simple tips for making a great burger for you and your family:
Work with the Right Ratios: To ensure your burger isn’t all bun, form your patty slightly larger than your bun to account for shrinkage.
Keep it Uniform: Before hitting the grill, put an indentation in the center of your patty so it cooks flat and prevents swelling in the middle.
Patience Pays Off: Avoid the temptation of flipping burgers too early. Wait until the burger releases from the grill and only flip once.
Keep it Hot: Always use a thermometer and make sure your burger is cooked to a safe and savory internal temperature of 160○F.
For more beef burger recipes to keep your friends and family happy and satisfied all summer long, visit BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com.
We’ll be at Market Saturday with our lean, flavor filled burger and more. If you need a large quantity - send an e-mail to federman@charter.net or call 608-574-2899 by Friday evening and we will have your order ready for pick-up at the market. Not yet a member of our Meat CSA? Stop by our table and we will help you get registered. See you Saturday!
Pam Rosecky
Hi this is Pam Rosecky and I will be doing chair massages again this year. $ 1.00 per minute working shoulders neck and arms for a relaxing experience while under big oak trees. See you there.
Sitka Salmon
We will be back at market this Saturday with a variety of wild-caught Alaskan seafood.
Shooting Star Farm
The weather is finally warming and I’ll have a few new items on the table this week. Bunched beets from the hoophouse are ready. There will be a limited supply, so come early-ish if you want some. I’ll also have some of the smaller kohlrabi – again from the hoophouse. In addition, napa cabbage may make an appearance. My kale crop is outdoors and under row cover to give it extra heat, but it’s awfully slow this year (unbelievably slow!). However, I may finally have some bunched for this first week of June. Other items on the table will include large heads of romaine, green butter, green leaf, and red leaf lettuce; mixed baby lettuce heads, baby-ish bok choy, bunched of green garlic, salad mix, oregano, a bit of cilantro, and spinach. I will not have arugula this week. The new patch is simply a wreck. I have to protect the spicy salad greens from bugs with floating row cover. The moisture captured underneath has simply been too much for many delicate greens. There will be a bit in the salad mix but none available separately. Lastly, it is the last week for tomato transplants. Come and get ‘em! See you Saturday!
Sweet Earth Garden and Vintage China
Sweet Earth Gardens will be at the market this week.
Usborne Books and More with Katie

I'm sponsoring a kids activity corner once a month for your kids to play and learn within your view at market. This weekend I will be in the Dodge Lodge doing a story time and crafts at 9:30 and 10:15. Throughout the summer my booth will carry a different theme, and at times portions of my proceeds will go to benefit local groups and organizations.  You can always shop my link online or contact me directly if you don’t see what you’re looking for at the booth https://d8159.myubam.com/1240701 or benishk4@gmail.com.

May 25th - Week 4

Hello MP Market Goers!

I can't believe that Memorial Day Weekend is here already. So much so that I keep checking the calendar to make sure it really is! With the cool, wet weather we've been having this spring us farmers and our crops are a bit behind. At this rate we might not have strawberries until the Fourth of July (just kidding, hopefully they'll be here around the 15th).
But really this weekend is about celebrating family; those with us and those we've lost. The weather looks like it's going to cooperate (at least on Sunday) and give us that opportunity to gather around the grill. So grab some veggies and meat at market Saturday and remember together.
Here's an easy and delicious recipe for grilled asparagus.

Here is a partial list of items at this week's market:
Beef, Pork, Bacon, Poultry, Cheese, Eggs, Spinach, Arugula, Salad Mix, Lettuce Heads, Radishes, Salad Turnips, Bok Choy, Green Garlic, Rhubarb, Tomato Plants, Asparagus, Dilly Beans, Maple Syrup, Honey, Croissants, Breakfast Sandwiches, Beautifully Designed Flower Bouquets, Coffee, Sweet and Savory Baked Goods, Watercolor Paintings, Prints, and Cards, Wildlife Prints and Cards, Chair Massages, Wood Crafts, Kids Activities, and much more. Come and check it all out!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday in Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

They say, when the cats away the mice will play! Well, this week this cat will be off creating magic in Iowa, for our kick off to wedding season! And that means, I unfortunately will not be at market this week! But will attempt to have a stand in on June 1st as we are back in the corn state next weekend for an event also.  But at any rate, I will be ready for you all again on Saturday, June 8th! Until then, have a great Memorial Day weekend, pray for no more rain (for a while) and see you all soon! Jason
James' Pine-Valley Farm
Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to market last week before the storms.  Hopefully this Saturday will be better.  We will have our usual items again this week  -  whole chicken, half chicken, leg/thigh packages and breast packages.  Also gizzards and hearts and livers.  With the holiday weekend coming up why not try a half chicken on the grill.  A great way to enjoy the day along with your favorite side dishes.  We will also have many cheese varieties along with several dozen eggs.  Happy Memorial Day!    Ralph and Mary Jean, James Pine Valley Farm

Shooting Star Farm
Last week’s market was quick and hectic. Sorry we had to close down early due to the storm rolling in. It ended up not raining too much, but with the lightening it was a good decision to keep everyone safe.  Thanks to the customers who helped all of us tear down in a rush! No rain in the forecast this Saturday, and it looks like spring temperatures are finally here. This weekend I’ll have lots of greens for Memorial Day picnic salads. Here’s my anticipated list: Spinach, arugula, salad mix, green, red, and butter lettuce (larger heads), mixed baby lettuces, red and French breakfast radishes, bunched salad turnips, bok choy, and green garlic bunches. Green garlic looks like a scallion, but is the garlic plant prior to forming a bulb. You can use just like garlic – greens and all. I may have some rhubarb, too (though I’m moving my patch and not much is left of the original plants). I will continue to bring tomato plants for sale, with some new varieties this week. Plus, I have basil plants, too. See you Saturday!
Sweet Earth Garden and Vintage China
Sweet Earth Gardens will be at the market this week.

It has been a gorgeous week, and I’m hoping the rain holds off for the weekend Market (and my son’s soccer tournament!). Even if it doesn’t, we’ll be there unless there’s lightening, so bring your umbrella and get your greens! Here’s what’s on the table this week: red radishes, salad turnips (still sweet and beautiful), cilantro, spinach, baby arugula, bok choy, mixed small/medium sized lettuce heads, and salad mix. The salad mix will be a little shy on lettuce since I’m between crops of the baby stuff, but it will be fresh, beautiful, and delicious. I will also have certified organic tomato plants for sale. Lots of great standard red varieties and a few heirlooms. See you Saturday!

Sitka Salmon
We will be at market this week with a variety of wild-caught Alaskan seafood.
Shooting Star Farm
Thanks to everyone for coming out to the first Market of the year. We had a beautiful opening weekend. It’s great to have some new vendors this season. Café 43 is joining us with coffee, breakfast burritos, and croissants. And this week Sitka Salmon Shares will be bringing a variety of wild-caught Alaskan seafood. The Denim Dog Den will have hand-made toys and treats for your pets. Plus, the Mineral Point High School FFA will have items from their annual plant sale available to get your gardens underway. Come and check out the newly restored Governor Dodge Lodge which will be hosting kids activities from 9am-10:30 each Saturday. Looks like this Saturday will be dry and nice, too. As you probably guessed, the crops are growing slowly with this cool spring. I’m still harvesting mostly from the hoophouse, and have limited space in there. But I will have more variety this week. New items will include spinach and baby lettuce heads. I should have substantially more radishes and salad turnips this week, and will continue to have salad mix, bok choy (really nice baby heads), cilantro, and arugula. I will also be bringing some certified organic tomato plants for the next three weeks. This week I’ll have some basic short and tall vine red tomatoes, an assortment of heirloom varieties, and a few different cherry types. In the coming weeks I will add a few container varieties and paste/plum tomatoes. Get some coffee and stay a while! See you Saturday!

Marr's Valley View Farms
Welcome to the Mineral Point Market 2019 Season. We are waiting for the warm weather to return for Saturday and of course no snow! This year we celebrate the 145th anniversary of owning our family farm. Part of longevity is sustainability. According to Wikipedia, "sustainability is the process of maintaining change in a balanced environment, in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development and institutional change are all in harmony and enhance both current and future potential to meet human needs and aspirations". Whew!!! What does that mean for our farm? Generations have worked to sustain and preserve our farmland. Our next step is to reduce our use of plastic bags. Soooooo...we have some snazzy new totes we will pack your orders in on Saturday. Help us 'maintain change' by getting in the habit of bringing your tote to Market. Starting May 10th customers who come back with their totes will receive 5% off their orders throughout the month of May. How exciting is that!
This week Marr's Valley View Farms will have the complete offering of our products to choose from. Everything from lean Ground Beef to Tenderloin Steaks to Pork Chops to everyone's favorite - Bacon!  We have lots and lots of Bacon!  If you need a large quantity or just want to pre-order for pick-up at Market, e-mail your order to federman@charter.net by 5:00 pm on Friday night. It is never too early to place your order for that special graduation party or Memorial weekend cookouts. We are offering pick-up of our Meat CSA at market again this year. with first pickup May 10th. Ask us on Saturday for details and how to sign up. See you soon - all of us at Marr's Valley View Farms.
Scrappin' With Joni
I am sorry to miss the opening day of the Mineral Point Market, one of my favorite summer events. I will be at Market all of the other Saturdays in May.
Shooting Star Farm
It been less than six months since our last Market inside the lovely Aspen Ridge greenhouse, and now we’re back outdoors. Spring has been less than cooperative this year, so I’m awfully glad for some hoophouse space to push the season along. For this weekend I’ll definitely have lots of salad mix, arugula, and radishes, a limited supply of baby lettuce heads, and possibly some baby bok choy. My wintered-over crops didn’t do well this year – blame in on the deep freeze and lots of ice – so I will not have spinach for this first market, but probably for May 11th. Lots in the ground. We just need a little sunshine to move it along. Looks like Saturday’s weather will be fine, so come on out and see us!
