June 28th - Week 8

Hello MP Market Goers!
Gotta love the Mineral Point Market!  I so love the Mineral Point Market!  I am always talking with our farm customers about this market because of its diversity of product and it's close proximity to us.  Who needs to drive all the way into Madison for a good market when we have a fantastic market right here in Mineral Point?  Not me, though we do sell at the Madison market occasionally.

At the Mineral Point Market, we can get all our fresh food for the week.  Plus if we happen to need any gifts there are several great market vendors that can provide me with a prefect gift.  And to top it off, breakfast at the market is a must.

Here is a partial list of items at this week's market:  Sugar Snap Peas, Strawberries, Arugula, Mixed Greens, Beef, Pork, Chicken, Eggs, Cheese, Honey, Maple Syrup, Fresh Cut Flowers, Kohlarbi, Parsley, Basil, Perennials, Artisan Breads and Baked Goods, Kale, Beets, Salad Dressing, Scallions, Rhubarb, Wildlife prints, Watercolor art, Dehydrated Veggies, Corn meal and Corn Flour, Radishes, green onions, yard art, Head Lettuce, Herbs, Spinach, Bok Choy, napa cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, and much more.   Come and check it all out!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Co-Manager

We’re in between on crops of radishes and sugar snap peas, so may not have any for this weekend. More will be back soon. What we will have: Beets, napa cabbage, green cabbage, kale, Swiss chard, kohlrabi, spinach, salad mix, lettuce, arugula, mini onions or scallions, a few cucumbers and zucchini, cilantro, parsley, basil, fennel, and rhubarb. UW Platteville Office of Sustainability
We'll be back in a few weeks.  In summer of 2013 UW-Platteville planted six acres of sunflowers just west of Menards on Business 151. "Food and fuel for our future" is our motto and maximizing local resources is our goal. This student-driven project produced sunflower oil from field to table!
WHY SUNFLOWERS?
Sunflower's grow well in Wisconsin, make a great bio-fuel, a healthy cooking oil comparable to olive oil, and can be grown with the same farming equipment as corn. The pulp (press meal) that remains once the oil is pressed out of the seeds makes an excellent high-protein cattle feed."

Here is a list of the unconfirmed vendors that may or may not be at market this week:

If you are interested in being a vendor, contact Jenny Bonde at starfarm@mhtc.net or Lois Federman at federman@charter.net.

Well, we certainly have had our share (and then some!) of weather this week.  I hope everyone has survived relatively unscathed.  Granted, we needed the rain but what a way to get it!!  This is just to let you all know that Mummu will not be at Market this Sat., June 21 so you will have to start summer officially without me!  I'm taking some R&R "girl" time with a friend and I am very much looking forward to it.  I do plan to be there on June 28 with lots of "Stars and Stripes" in the newest creations.  Your dolls will want to be all decked out for the 4th of July so I'll be providing many things to choose from ahead of time.  And, as always, if you need a quick gift or just want to see the latest additions, please call me at 623-2592 and we can set up a time for you to come and shop at my house in Cobb.  Have a great  "2 weeks!"   I'll see you at Market on June28!!  Mummu (this is Finnish for "Grandma")

Seems like every year we get at least one whopper of a storm that does some damage in the fields. I hope Monday night’s was our first and last of the season! Our house, buildings, and greenhouses didn’t sustain any damage, but leafy greens took quite a beating (as did some trees). Some other crops were knocked sideways and have yet to stand up but probably will over time. For Saturday the items we definitely will have are kale, kohlrabi, beets, radishes, sugar snap peas, scallions, salad greens of some sort along with arugula, and  rhubarb. Crops that were damaged but may be available include head lettuces, spinach, herbs, napa cabbage, and bok choy. Sounds like Saturday weather will be quite nice once again. See you then! We certainly had a fantastic day at the farm last Sat. for the Dairy Breakfast. What a great way to promote our dairy industry.  I'm sure everyone appreciates the work that went into planning the day as well as everything the dairy farmers provide us with. Lots of people, great food, fun activities, great food, animals and did I mention...great food!!!???  Haydn (my grandson) and I had a wonderful time. When I got home, I had to sit down to the sewing machine and get busy.  I had lots of fun working with the strawberry fabrics, embellishments, etc.  and am happy with what was made.  Do stop by and check it all out on Sat. when you pick up your fresh berries!  I do plan to be at Market this Sat., June 14 (as always, weather permitting.)  It sounds like another beautiful Market day coming up.  But if things change and rain is predicted, the dolls and I will have to stay in Cobb...(remember, they don't swim and they do NOT like water.   BUT they DO love to wear new bathing suits so I will have several new ones available.)  If we ever do have a rainy Market day and I'm not there, give me a call at 623-2592  if you need a gift or just want to see the new stuff, and you can come to Cobb and shop at my house!  Have a great week!!  See you on Saturday!!! Mummu (this is Finnish for "Grandma")

New this week at market will be sugar snap peas. Yum. We won’t have very many, since they are just starting, but a few early customers will get lucky! Also new will be kohlrabi. We grew an earlier, smaller variety for spring, which is sweet, juicy, and Charlie approved. It is different than the larger “Kossak” variety that we grow for summer and fall. To eat kohlrabi, simply lightly peel and cut into chunks or slices for a yummy, raw snack. It’s also great cooked in a skillet with onions and thinly sliced potatoes. Other items to look for on our table include red and green leaf lettuces, red and green butter lettuces, mixed smaller heads of lettuce, baby arugula, salad mix, spinach, Swiss chard, Siberian kale, salad turnips, radishes, baby bok choy, parsley, and rhubarb. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie

It is still asparagus season and we are loving it.  Soon it will get too hot and this delicious grass will fern out and be no more.  Then of course it will be strawberry season!  Expect our berry season to begin around Father's Day or a little bit thereafter.  At market this week we will have plenty of asparagus, local non-pasteurized honey, pure Wisconsin maple syrup, rhubarb, frozen cream of asparagus soup, and more of our farm fresh eggs.  Please check our website for hours and availability. Like us on Facebook or signup for our e-newsletter to get the latest shovel on what’s happening in the Patch!  Hope to see you in the Patch or at market soon!
Carrie's Branch
Mediterranean style salad sauce is the kind of dressing I make.  Original creamy garlic and creamy garlic with feta and green onion will be my 1st variations.  It has a Bold, fresh taste, all natural and NO preservatives.  Very healthy! Can be used as a topping for baked potatoes, pasta, steamed veggies/spinach, tacos, chili/lentil soup, sandwich spread and of course mixed into salads.

Many thanks for all of you who have come out and supported the first month of market Saturdays.  The first couple were not very weather friendly but the last two have been great!  I will not be at the market this Saturday as I am very involved in feeding a couple thousand people at the Iowa County Dairy Breakfast at the Dannenberg Family Farm located a few miles south of Mineral Point off Hwy 23.  We will be serving a delicious breakfast from 6:30 to 10:30; including ice cream sundaes (never too early for ice cream), entertainment, kids activities, petting zoo, door prizes
and much more.  Plenty of parking on the grounds or shuttle bus from Mineral Point High School.  Attend market early or late and have breakfast in between.  Mary Jean

Magic Light Photography
I will be at market this weekend with my large selection of my handmade greeting cards featuring my original photographs.  All of my cards are blank inside so they can be used for any occasion.  I will also have a selection of bookmarks that make great little gifts.   Along with the cards and bookmarks, I will have a large selection of my limited edition photographic prints.  My prints are all matted, signed and numbered by me and ready to slip into the frame of your choice.  I will have a couple new photos printed on metal on display this year as well!  If there is something particular you are looking for, please ask as I may have something that fits your needs that isn't on display at the market.  The book I have been working on is done, and on it's way.  I'm hoping to have them available this weekend if they are delivered on time!  You can also view my work at www.magiclightphotography.com. I look forward to seeing you all this Saturday under the water tower!   See you Saturday! Thanks, Mike

Matchbook Magnets
Hello market-goers!  Weather permitting I will be at the market Saturday with my magnets.  They are made using images from vintage matchbooks my Dad collected during the golden age of matchbook advertising – the 1940s thru early 1960s.  They will brighten your kitchen, office, workshop or man cave and are a unique and personal gift for any special occasion.  Father’s Day is right around the corner, so stop by and pick up a magnet that is sure to be appreciated by your special dad.  Email:  matchbookmagnets@yahoo.com  See you Saturday!  Cindy
Mummu's Makeovers
What a great day last Saturday was for "Market-goers".  The weather was great and the people were fantastic!  I will not be at Market this Sat., June 7 as my grandchildren and I will be supporting our Iowa County Dairy Breakfast.  It looks like another great day to be outside and from the reports I've heard re: the event, it should be a super way to promote our dairy industry!  But I do plan to be at Market on Sat. June 14.  It seems strawberries will likely be ripe by then so I have been sewing some cute outfits w/strawberry fabrics and embellishments to celebrate!  I will also have more bathing suits as well as some new summer dresses, shorts, etc. as well as the usual things.  It may be a challenge, but do try to support the Dairy Breakfast AND your local Market on Sat.   Maybe I'll see you on the farm!!  If you need a quick gift before June 14, feel free to call me at 623-2595 and we can set up a time for you to shop at my house in Cobb.  Have a great week!
Mummu (this is Finnish for "Grandma")

Shooting Star Farm
We’ve had a nice round of good weather for Saturday markets, and it looks like this weekend will be no exception. Here’s our produce line-up: Salad mix, baby arugula, small heads of mixed lettuces and romaine, larger heads of green and red butter lettuce, red radishes, kale, Swiss chard, baby beets, dill, cilantro, rhubarb, a small amount of spinach, and possibly salad turnips (we’re in between crops on these last two, but hope to have some of both). Baby bok choy may also be ready. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie.
Sweet Earth Gardens and Vintage China
I will be here this week with poppies, iris, lupines, peonies, and Siberian iris.  I am very excited to be bringing fresh cut flowers back to the Mineral Point Market. Barbara Manion-Platt
UW Platteville Office of Sustainability
