May 30th - Week 5

Hello MP Market Goers!

Doesn't it feel wonderful to be eating fresh from the market once again?  I love knowing that my food is only a couple of days from the field.  If I don't happen to get around to making that salad I had planned on; no big deal because the lettuce keeps so well! Love that!
Doesn't it also feel wonderful to have the sun shining on us once again? We've had a lot of rain lately, which we kinda needed but I wouldn't say we needed 3.5"!  Wow, it got pretty wet here.  Thankfully, we've had a couple days of sun to dry things out a bit.  We especially needed this sun because the strawberries are at full blossom and the bees needed to be out pollinating! We have 4 bumble bee hives here at the Patch and they are so fun to watch because they do twice the work of a honey bee!  They collect nectar like the honey bee but they also harvest pollen and stick it to their little legs (I call it their saddle bags).  By sticking the pollen to their legs they transfer a little bit to every flower they go to. Pretty neat! Go bees go!
We had a great market last week with lots of vendors and lots of friends in attendance and this week will be excellent as well.  We have a new product making its debut at Marr's Valley View Farm booth... It's a drinkable, caffeinated, strawberry yogurt!  Stop by and give it a try! Also, did you get a chance last week to try Gough's Chocolate Green Bean Cake? Wow, delicious! Try it out for yourself, Mary has lots of great items to make baking healthier.

Here is a partial list of items at this week's market:  Beef, Pork, Chicken, Eggs, Cheese, Asparagus, kale, spinach, red and French breakfast radishes, little gem romaine lettuce, kohlrabi, salad turnips, salad mix, arugula, rhubarb, cilantro, baby bok choy, Swiss chard, napa cabbages, Maple Syrup, Frozen Sweet Corn, Baked Goods, Dilly Beans, Watercolor art, Wildlife Prints, Dehydrated veggies, Corn meal and flour, Baby Food, Alpaca Products, Perennial Plants, BBQ Sauce, Salsa, Jams, and Jellies, drinkable yogurt, and so much more.   Come and check it all out!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

I'm excited to be back for my 4th year offering magnets made using vintage matchbook images.  It’s been quite a journey and full of surprises.  When I started vending, I thought women would be my primary customer.  As it turns out, men make up a big segment of my supporters.  Now it may have something to do with the subject matter! Magnets that are popular with men feature hunting, fishing, farming, bowling, billiards, and beer -- especially the ever popular "Beer is Good for You".  My next market will be June 6 and Father's Day is right around the corner, so stop by and see if there's a magnet fitting for your special dad.  I'm sure you will have just as much fun deciding as he will receiving a one-of-a-kind gift.  See you June 6!  matchbookmagnets@yahoo.com  Cindy

What a perfect day we had for the opening Market!  I hope this weekend is just as nice!  Camden  made his first trip to the market last week but I think he slept through it.  Holden liked the 20th anniversary button on my had so much that he now has it on his hat!  When I told him it was a button, he tried to push it. :)  I am planning on being back at the market once again with a large selection of my nature and wildlife prints and cards, along with a book featuring almost 80 of my favorite photos.  Don't forget that Mother's Day is coming up and my photos and cards would make a great gift for any nature loving mom out there.  My photos don't handle moisture very well so I won't be at the market if there is rain in the forecast.  When I'm not at the market my cards are always available at the Mineral Point Collection located on High Street.  Hope to see you this weekend!
Marr's Valley View Farms
Bratwurst are here in all their glory! We have already put some on the grill- it's amazing how great the first ones of the season taste each year. Did you try our new Applewood Smoked Bacon last week - what did you think?
We are well stocked with Beef Short Ribs, Pork Spare Ribs, Hamburger Patties, Pork Chops and Steaks for those weekend cookouts.  Here's some tips for preparing tender steaks:
*Pat beef steaks dry with paper towels for better browning
*Turn steaks with tongs. A fork pierces the beef allowing loss of flavorful juices
*Salt beef after cooking or browning. Salt draws out moisture and inhibits browning
Memorial Day and graduation parties are just around the corner. If you need a large quantity - send an e-mail to federman@charter.net or call 608-574-2899 by Friday evening and we will have your order ready for pick-up at the market. We continue to offer pickup for our Farm Connection Meat CSA at Market again this year - ask us on Saturday for details and how to join.  See you soon under the Water Tower!  All of us at Marr's Valley View Farms.  Mineral Point, WI.
Matchbook Magnets
I won’t be vending at the market this week, but am excited to be back for my 4th year offering magnets made using vintage matchbook images.  It’s been quite a journey and full of surprises – like the reaction young kids have to the magnets.  Their little index fingers come out as they say “I want that one, and I want that one, and I want that one,” while their adult is telling them to pick out ONE!  It’s so much fun watching kids go through the decision making process and walk away proudly holding their choice.  They gravitate toward the magnets with animals, birds, flowers, and one that is a favorite of all ages “Candy is Delicious Food – Enjoy Some Every Day!”  I’ll be back on May 23rd.  See you then!  matchbookmagnets@yahoo.com  Cindy
Queen Bee Acres
How fun to be back for another season at the Mineral Point Market.  And how exciting  to be part of the 20th anniversary celebration!  Stop at the Queen Bee Acres booth for local honey from Iowa and Lafayette counties, available in glass and plastic bottles of various sizes.  Yes, creamed honey will be available while supplies last.  We will also have sweet smelling golden beeswax for sale in small, medium & large size bars.  Beeswax has many uses such as candle making, waterproofing, cosmetics, thread conditioning, lubrication or for polishing.  Come and enjoy the Market.  Feel free to stop and chat or ask questions about beekeeping.  We are happy to share our beekeeper adventurers and what we have learned from raising bees.  Pete & Fran Demo, Keepers of the bees; www.queenbeeacres.com
Shooting Star Farm
Thanks everyone for making our first market of the year such a great success. We were a bit overwhelmed, it being just May 2nd and all. But we will have a lot more produce this weekend. Some new items will include some nice, medium-sized heads of lettuce, salad mix, and Tokyo bekana (a Japanese cabbage). In addition, we'll have LOTS of red radishes (just a few French breakfast), baby arugula, rhubarb, wild-harvested ramps, baby bok choy, and cilantro. The weather looks good, so come on out! See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie
Sweet Earth Gardens
Sweet Earth Gardens will be at the market this week.  We will have fresh tulips and bleeding hearts.  New this year is our hand painted, oak row markers.  Looking forward to another beautiful Saturday. Hope to see you then, Barbara

Here is a list of the unconfirmed vendors that may or may not be at market this week:
