Week 18 - August 31st

Hello MP Market Goers!

What a rare market we have in Mineral Point!  Not many small town markets boast the selection of products that this market has; in addition to the wonderful food available at market we have many artists that come each week to sell their handmade creations.  Mike from Magic Light Photography is always on the prowl to get a new great shot of a beautiful animal in the wild for a card or a picture to hang in your house.  Diane from DDP Beads works to design and craft new, beautiful, and sparkly jewelry for you to wear out and about.  And Jan Johnson is in her studio painting wonderful watercolor pictures for a new shirt, a trivet, or a necklace.  And that's just to name a few of our artistic vendors.
At the Mineral Point Market you get so much more than just food.  You get works of art both from the field and from the galleries and studios!

Here is a partial list of items at this week's market:  pears, alpaca fleece and products, eggs, green beans, beets, brats, burgers, chicken, basil, carrots, kohlrabi, potatoes, watercolor creations, garden plants, honey, maple syrup, jams (lots of varieties), swiss chard, kale, wildlife pictures and cards, summer squash, zucchini, raspberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, egg plant, scallions, garlic, breakfast treats, lettuce (many kinds), cabbage, mini onions, beaded jewelry, artisan breads, sweet corn, and much more!  Come and check it all out!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Kathy Bures
Co-Manager

Week 17 - August 24th

Hello MP Market Goers!

Wow, it is a rain day on the farm!  We haven't had a day like this since I do not know when.  Feels so good!  This is when farmers get a chance to catch up on all those things they put off when the weather is nice (book work, equipment maintenance, etc.).  Fun stuff right?  I love the chance to finally minimize some of the piles that have been sitting on the desk for way too long.

Beyond the office and shop work though the crops really appreciate this rain.  Both Shooting Star and Bures Berry Patch have had their water systems going for the last several weeks but not all of us have this ability so mother nature is needed.  This rain will help plump up the sweet corn, grow the squash, fatten up the pears, apples, tomatoes and peppers.  In addition, it will grown the hay that will be fed to our livestock.  All of which will make a delicious addition to your table.

Here is a partial list of items at this week's market:  pears, alpaca fleece and products, eggs, green beans, beets, brats, burgers, chicken, basil, carrots, kohlrabi, potatoes, watercolor paintings, garden plants, honey, maple syrup, jams (lots of varieties), swiss chard, kale, summer squash, zucchini, raspberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, egg plant, scallions, fresh garlic, breakfast treats, lettuce (many kinds), cabbage, mini onions, spinach, sweet corn, and much more!  Come and check it all out!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Week 15 - August 10th

Hello MP Market Goers!

Did you know it is National Farmers' Market Week?  And did you know that there are 8,144 markets listed on the USDA's list of farmers' markets?  Pretty cool!  What better way to celebrate than with a Market Basket Drawing!  Be sure to sign up for your chance to win a basket full of market goodies direct from the vendors of the Mineral Point Market; it is our way of saying thanks for supporting your local vendors at the Mineral Point Market!

It is a big weekend in Mineral Point!  Come on out Saturday morning to market and watch as cyclists compete in the Dairyland Dare, in the event bikers will ride anywhere from 50k to 300k in and around Mineral Point!  20% of the entry fees for this event go back to the volunteer groups in the area that help run the event, pretty cool if you ask me!
Also going on this weekend in Mineral Point is the High School Rodeo at the fairgrounds. If you haven't been before it is quite a display of horsemanship!

Week 14 - August 3rd

Hello MP Market Goers!

The summer is flying by but, we are just halfway through our market season.  There is so much more to be had from the Mineral Point Market.  We are starting to work our way into the late summer crops though and that means BLTs, corn on the cob, green beans, raspberries, cucumber salad, and lots of other deliciousness.
It also means in Mineral Point this Saturday is another gallery night!  Looking for a reason to walk the town and enjoy this beautiful weather?  Come on out to see all the great artisans, and their ware, of Point.  Great idea for a date night guys (hint, hint).
And next weekend is the big weekend for the Dairyland Dare.  Be sure to come up to market and cheer on the riders!
Dairyland Dare Help Needed!
Set in the bucolic hills of SW Wisconsin the 8th annual Dairyland Dare http://www.dairylanddare.com/ event on August 10th offers a day of challenging climbs, superior support, and scenic splendor for cyclists attending the event from over 20 different U.S. States. The hills in the area are not huge, but by the end of the day riders on the longest distance will have climbed over 20,000 ft - the equivalent of Mt. McKinley. WI Bikes For Good, the charitable arm of the event, donates to all the volunteer groups helping out and will pass the $100,000 donation mark in 2013.
Check out the “Bike the Hills – We Dare You” post at http://highstreetbeat.net/
4 flagging volunteers are needed in Mineral Point on August 10th (donation benefiting the MP Chamber of Commerce ) to direct cyclists and watch for traffic at the 2 big intersections on High Street. Detailed map attached. Vests and flags can be picked up at the MP Chamber of Commerce office.

Marr's Valley View Farms
We can't quite believe that the month of August has arrived.  Lois's birthday is in August. When we were growing up she hated to see it come because it meant the end of Summer and the beginning of school.  We've been seeing ads for "back to school shopping" and today saw M & M's packaged in fall colors.  Next we'll be seeing Christmas decorations in the stores....where does time go!?!  But never fear we have almost 3 full months of the Mineral Point Market left.
This week we would like to focus on the return of my our grandmother's cooking oil of choice - Open Kettle Rendered Lard.  Pure lard is especially useful for cooking since it produces little smoke when heated and has a distinct taste when combined with other foods. Many chefs and bakers deem lard a superior cooking fat over shortening because of lard's range of applications and taste.  Because of the relatively large fat crystals found in lard, it is extremely effective as a shortening in baking.  Pie crusts made with lard tend to be more flaky than those made with butter. Many cooks use both types of fat in their pastries to combine the shortening properties of lard with the flavor of butter.
A slice of bread spread with lard was a typical staple in traditional rural cuisine of many countries. I'm not quite sure I'm ready for that - I think I'll stay with Wisconsin Butter on my bread.  Stop by our table on Saturday and pickup your tub of Valley View Farms Lard.
As usual we'll have our full line of Beef and Pork products for your dining pleasure.
If you need a large quantity - send an e-mail to federman@charter.net or call 608-574-2899 by Friday evening and we will have your order ready for pick-up at the market. See you Saturday!  All of us at Marr's Valley View Farms.

Shooting Star Farm
We've had great weather for working this week. A nice change from 92 degrees. Last week's heat brought on the eggplant. We'll have some on our table this week. Other new items will include red and green scallions, bunched fresh onions, and possibly a few green peppers. Also look for cherry tomatoes, a small amount of heirloom and red tomatoes, loads of beautiful green beans, salad mix, heads of lettuce, beets, kale, swiss chard, summer squash, cucumbers, basil, garlic, and fennel. That should do it. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie.
