Week 18 - September 1st

Hello MP Market Goers!

Labor Day Weekend is here!  Get your grills out, cut the watermelon, and make the potato salad.  It is time to kick back, have some friends over, and relax on the back deck.  It's the last weekend before the kids go back to school and the chaos begins.  Let's just take a deep breath and enjoy the weekend, head to the Iowa County Fair maybe.  But first come on out to market and enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee, a roll, and great camaraderie.  Come on out to market where you can get the freshest, tastiest food around for that backyard Labor Day celebration.  Come on out to the Mineral Point Market where you can get gorgeous things for your home and for you.  You can get it all at the Mineral Point Market Saturday mornings!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Carey's Green House
My name is Delbert Carey and I was born and raised in Mineral Point.  I have many annuals that can be used in both container gardens and traditional growing spaces. Because of my time at Pendarvis, English garden favorites such as lilacs, hollyhocks, and hostas are also favorites of mine. I taught pre-school for eight years and learned just how much fun kids can have growing sunflowers and pumpkins. Finally I’ve always had a weakness for climbing vines such as morning glories and moon flowers.
My parents have enjoyed joining in on this little project and they helped me choose the name Carey’s Green House which is an inside joke. After forty-six years of living in the same white house, last summer my parents decided to paint the whole thing Green, and thus the bulk of my plants come from Carey’s green house. All of the plants we offer for sale are either annuals grown naturally from seeds or perennials that are either grown from seeds or grown from cuttings of plants that have grown in my parents gardens for the last 46 years.
I hope to see you all at the market!

Week 16 - August 18th

Hello MP Market Goers!

Congratulations Jude Clayton, winner of last week's market basket giveaway!  Lucky Jude will be picking up a basket full of wonderful items from the vendors.  Thanks so much to all for your support of the Mineral Point Market!
Whew, what a nice rain last night.  We got 1.5 inches and our beautiful but very tall sorghum is still standing at about 10 feet, it sure is amazing how strong their stems are and how much wind they can withstand!
The weather looks as though it will only get better for the weekend.  Which if anyone remembers is garage sale weekend in Mineral Point.  But before heading out to the sales be sure to stock up your fridge with food from market for the week.  With the rain, produce will be extra juicy and delicious!  I know that I have yet to get my fill of BLTs this season and even though we grow the sweet corn I am still loving it on our table just about every evening (even last night I threw some of our freezer corn into chicken wild rice soup, yummy).  Don't forget that much of the delicious produce you see at market can be preserved for use all winter long, I for one have to restock our sweet corn, pepper, and tomato supply.  So come on out to market and enjoy in the bounty year round!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Shooting Star Farm
For this Saturday: Eggplant! We have traditional purple Italian eggplant, a wonderful lavender variety, and an elongated Japanese variety. All can be used interchangeably. Do you need to salt eggplant prior to cooking? It depends how you cook it. Salting removes a lot of the moisture so your eggplant won’t absorb as much oil, but it isn’t necessary. Baked or fried dishes like eggplant parmesan benefit from salting to eliminate soggy slices. If you grill or steam, don’t bother to salt. We’ll have recipes and cooking tips. What goes with eggplant? Basil, onions, garlic, zucchini, and tomatoes – all of which are in good supply.  Also look for green beans (lots this week), beets, Swiss chard, curly kale, cherry tomatoes, and possibly some cucumbers (still waiting on that second planting!) Fresh shelling beans will be available for just a few weeks. You need to shuck these beans and simmer gently for about 25 minutes prior to eating. Delicious with a nice, garlicky vinaigrette and fresh tomatoes, or good olive oil and salt. Finally, we should have some small heads of lettuce and possibly salad mix. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie
Turtle Hill Wilds
Turtle Hill Wilds will be at market this Saturday with this summer's honey and a selection of creamed honeys flavored with wild fruit.  We are excited to share our mid summer harvest with you!  Just made bramble berry jelly, prickly pear jelly, and a variety of jams will also be on our table.  See you Saturday.
