Shooting Star Farm
It’s hard to believe September is here and we’ll soon be switching from summer crops to fall. For now, the weather still definitely says “summer”, but we do hope to have our first fall crop of radishes (red ones and possibly French breakfast if the heat doesn’t do them in). We’ll have some nice heads of lettuce, frisee endive, baby arugula, and lots of salad mix to make delicious salads. Cooking greens will include kale, Swiss chard, bok choy, napa cabbage, and you can always cook those beet greens from your beets! We still have lots of beautiful red tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, colorful heirloom tomatoes, and paste tomatoes. Other summer items include eggplant, sweet red peppers, green peppers, sweet white onions, Italian bottle onions, and lemon cucumbers (super crispy and juicy - they just look somewhat like a lemon). For herbs we should have a bit of basil (almost done), sage, parsley. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie

Week 17 - August 27th

Hello MP Market goers!

Things are calming down a bit before the big Labor Day celebrations. We have been pleasantly surprised to not have much on the calendar from here until school starts, whew! For us on the farm, things have been a bit more restful because we are waiting for crops to come ripe for harvest (raspberries and our last two plantings of sweet corn). Hopefully, we will have both of them for next weekends activities. Right now though it appears to be TOMATO TIME! Rink and Jenny have been harvesting like crazy and they will have a wide selection this week. Might be time to make some salsa of your own or even ketchup. I'll probably be making salsa next weekend, yummy! There are lots of good recipes on the web; hot or mild, sweet or tangy, fresh or canned. Delicious!

On another note, I can not believe that it is almost September! Kids will be going back to school soon and we will all need quick easy meals to make when the kids come rushing through our doors. Our favorite method of cooking at the Patch is the grill. We usually roast some potatoes (fingerlings) with garlic and olive oil then throw on some brats, burgers, or steaks (and Marr's Valley View Farm has all of these). Super quick and super easy, though we have found that our little guy likes steaks the best, yikes!

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Tomatoes, tomatoes. We are really having a great season for them this year. There was a bit of a slowdown due to some blossom drop with excessive heat in July, but they are definitely rolling in now. In addition to the heirloom, cherry tomatoes, and some nice big ,red slicers, we should have some paste tomatoes this week. These are good raw but great cooked. They create a delicious, thick, sweet sauce. Great for using on eggplant parmesan! Yes, we still have plenty of gorgeous eggplant. Frisee’ is a type of endive that we grow in the spring and fall. It’s terrific in a salad with fresh pears and blue cheese. We’ll bring recipes. Zucchini and summer squash are on the wane so get them while you can. Shooting Star Farm
We got hit with a very quick and very intense storm last Saturday afternoon. We didn’t get a big amount of rain, but for a brief period the wind was quite ferocious. Branches went down, lettuce heads got shredded, basil was pummeled, chard leaves ripped. But tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and other crops look relatively untouched. Luckily the storm won’t affect our vegetable supply too much. We will continue to have lots of tomatoes: red slicers, gorgeous heirlooms both big and salad-sized, and cherry tomatoes. We’ll have red sweet Italian frying peppers (delicious raw), green peppers, and a few mildly spicy Ancho peppers. Our slicing cucumbers met an early end due to diseases, but we will have some lemon cucumbers. They look somewhat like lemons but taste like a crisp, juicy, refreshing cucumber (not lemony). Also look for lavender and purple eggplant, zucchini and summer squash, bunched beets, Swiss chard, green beans, kale, baby lettuce mix, onions, parsley, sage, a limited amount of basil, and garlic. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie.

Supreme Seafood
I have an assortment of seafood shrimp, cod, crab legs, lobster, scallops to alligator, frog legs, grouper and so much more most everything is coming directly from the boats in Alaska and Canada.
