Week 18 - August 28, 2010

Hello MP Market goers! The Unnamed Epic Bike Race comes to Mineral Point this weekend. The streets on the route, High, Doty or Fountain, will be closed to all parking and traffic Saturday morning until the last cyclist has passed. The race starts at 8 a.m. We anticipate they will be through the Mineral Point portion of the race by 8:30, so it is a very short time. Although High, Doty and Fountain Streets will be blocked off until 8:30, the area around Watertower Park, including North Iowa, Madison, and Ridge Streets will not be affected. If you usually come to Market via the blocked streets you can head up to Business Highway 151 on the north side of town and come over to the Market. Please extend a warm welcome to all the cyclists and their friends and families who may be along to watch. We hope this race becomes an annual one that will grow into something big.

Hurray for cooler, drier weather! We’ll actually have a fair amount of lettuce this weekend. Some salad mix will be available, too. It will be mostly baby lettuces with a bit of spicy greens tossed in. Tomatoes are slowing down a bit, but we still have plenty. We’ll offer red slicers, paste, heirlooms, and cherry tomatoes by the pound, pint and quart, and will have some larger quantities boxed up at a discount price. If you’d like larger quantities, or are willing to use large quantities of seconds (blemishes, small cracks), send us an email. We can set some aside. We’ll have lots of colorful peppers this weekend – all sweet – and few Anaheim (mildly hot) peppers, too. Also look for beets, carrots, zucchini, cucumbers, basil, green beans, Swiss chard, two types of kale (new crop for fall), and onions. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie.

Week 17 - August 21, 2010

Hello MP Market goers! Much nicer weather this week - I almost feel human again.

The August Market Basket winner is RICH MILZ ................... Congratulations Rich! Remember to come to Market this week to claim your winnings.

Thanks to Bob of WGLR for his annual "live broadcast" from the Mineral Point Market last week. Always our pleasure Bob!

If you stopped by Market last Saturday you saw we had three new vendors.

John and Janet Warrick are new on the Mineral Point local food scene with their handmade peanut brittle. They have a State approved kitchen in their home where they make their candies. Word has it that they will be adding a new Chocolate covered version, possibly caramels and more. I believe they intend to vend on a fairly regular basis.

Trying Market out for the first time were Diane Sterba of Mineral Point and Jack Nethery from Darlington. Diane brought intricate, detailed fairy houses that she makes. She's considering returning to another market in September. Jack brought his colorful, handmade mosaic tiles, planters, trivets, mirrors. Jack's work is top notch, high quality, colorful and just beautiful to the eye. We hope both Diane and Jack will come back and vend with us again.

These three new vendors and their products are a classic example of what makes the Mineral Point Market so interesting and fun. It enhances the already wide variety of high quality merchandise offered at the Market and keep things interesting - makes one want to come back each week to see what's new. For vendors it is a perfect place to "test the waters" to see if you like marketing your products and to receive feedback direct from the customer. For Jenny Bonde and I as Co-Market Managers, it's like Christmas every Saturday, you never know for sure what new products will show up - what fun!

Following is the list of who will be vending at this week's market - hope to see you there!

Tomatoes are still the story out here. We’ve been getting a decent harvest, even given the nearly 4 ½ inches of rain we received last week. The outdoor plants are starting to look a bit skeletal in places, but they’re still producing. Our hoophouse tomatoes look very good. Needless to say, we’ll have a nice variety of heirlooms, red slicers, romas, and cherry tomatoes. Look for recipes, too. We’ll have several. Eggplants and peppers are coming on strong. We have a nice variety of colors, shapes, and sizes to choose from. Our colorful peppers are mainly sweet – very sweet - but we’ll bring a few mildly hot Anaheims this week. They’ll add a little punch to salsa. Other items include beets, carrots, onions, garlic, basil, Swiss chard, a bit of lettuce and salad greens (still not caught up after all the heat and moisture), fennel, zucchini, and cucumbers. Several varieties of many of these items. Try something new! See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie.

If it's a bit to hot to cook in the house - we are fully stocked with ground beef patties, hot dogs and bratwurst for your grill. We are limited on steaks this week - popular items lately. With all this heat the tomatoes are ripening fast and furious. We’ll have a great supply this week: reds, heirlooms of all sizes and colors, paste tomatoes and yummy cherry tomatoes in red, orange and black. The cherry tomatoes are available by the pint or quart and make a great hot-weather snack. Wet and humid conditions mean lots of leaf diseases on the tomato plants, and we’ve been hearing from farmers friends that their crops are poor. Our crop is doing pretty well, all things considered, but it may be a shorter season than usual if the weather doesn’t dry out soon. Our eggplant is enjoying the hot, humid conditions, and we’ll have plenty (several varieties). Also look for mixed sweet peppers, onions, zucchini, cucumbers, beets, basil, garlic, carrots, and green beans. Lettuce will be in short supply, but we should have some red bibb and possibly a baby lettuce mix. It’s been a tough year for growing greens, but cooler weather is on the way. Saturday should be a beautiful day. See you then! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie

Ahhhhh - August - that means the "dog days of summer" are upon us. The weather certainly can confirm that although today was beautiful. If it's a bit to hot to cook in the house - we are fully stocked with ground beef patties, hot dogs and bratwurst for your grill. Ribeyes are back in stock but don't wait to get yours - we have a minimal quantity - they tend to fly out the door! And of course, Porterhouse, T-Bone, Tenderloin, New York Strip and Top Sirloin are irresistible on the grill. If you are like us, you are a lover of weekend family breakfasts that include bacon, pork sausage and ham steak. Bone in and Boneless Butterflied Pork Chops are great grilling companions to our beef products. Even though it is summer we have all varieties of Beef and Pork Roasts and on hand. Our Stew Meat makes the perfect shish-ka-bob meat. Or how about some Beef Short Ribs and Pork Spare Ribs "falling-off-the-bone" slow cooked and covered in Big Butz BBQ Sauce. When you dine on Marr's Valley View Farms meats, rest assured you are eating naturally lean meats - fresh beef and pork products direct from a local farm to you. The only stop in-between is a State or USDA inspected processing facility. No gassing or carbon monoxide irradiation necessary. If you need a large quantity - send an e-mail to federman@charter.net or call 608-574-2899 by Friday evening and we will have your order ready for pick-up at the market. See you Saturday! Shooting Star Farm

More heat and humidity means no salad mix this week. We’ve really been struggling to keep greens and lettuce going in this weather. Normally a sprinkler running during part of the day would cool the crops to keep lettuce from bolting and baby greens from dying in the heat. But because of the humidity, water just leads to rot and disease after a day or two. We will have some heads of lettuce, but mostly, we’ll have tomatoes. Good tradeoff! We’ll have plenty of red slicing tomatoes, sauce tomatoes, colorful heirloom tomatoes and lots of cherry tomatoes (tangy sungolds, sweet reds, and yummy black variety). Cucumbers and zucchini continue to do well. We’ve been picking every other day. We’ll have more beautiful bunched carrots, lots of beets, fennel, basil, two types of onions, some green beans, and Swiss chard. Our Italian frying peppers are turning red, which means they’re sweet enough to eat like an apple. Charlie loves them raw. We’ll also have a variety of colorful sweet peppers like pimentos, Jimmy Nardellos, and Romanian frying peppers. Most people are familiar with purple Italian eggplants, but we’re growing some unusual varieties this year including white, long green, lavender, and a baby “little finger” variety. Generally speaking, the lighter the eggplant, the more mild its flavor. Look for recipes at our stand. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie

Wyman Produce and Supreme Seafood

Liz Wyman and Molly Parker are a mother daughter team bringing a wide variety of products to the Mineral Point Market. We will continue to have Beefsteak tomatoes and Cherry tomatoes at the market in June. Along with our cucumbers, the tomatoes are all homegrown by us in our greenhouses in Potosi. Through the summer we will have seafood from Supreme Seafood including shrimp, talapia, salmon, cod, frog legs, lobster, crab legs, scallops and many more. The scallops, cod, crab and salmon are from Alaska. The lobster and reef shark are from the Caribbean. The shrimp is from the Gulf. The perch, bluegill and walleye are from Canada. Most all other are farm raised in Louisiana and Florida. We will be running a different special each week.

New vendors are always welcome although if we have a limited amount of spaces for each product category so some may be placed on a waiting list until a spot becomes available. If you know anyone that might enjoy selling at the market or perhaps you yourself would, please contact Jenny Bonde at starfarm@mhtc.net or call 608-967-2319, or myself, Lois Federman, at federman@charter.net or call 608-987-2097.

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point, WI. 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. Rain or Shine!
