Week 1 - May 1, 2010

Hello Mineral Point Market fans - welcome back! We are thrilled that the 2010 market season is here and are looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. We predict that this will be our "best season EVER".

What an exciting weekend is in store for those in Mineral Point. Not only is it opening day of the Mineral Point Market, which of course is reason enough to be excited, but it's the Grand Re-Opening of one of our community treasures - the Mineral Point Opera House.
For the full weekend schedule of events and to take a photo tour visit www.mpoh.org

Due to the increased interest in vending at the market you will be welcomed this Saturday with a new look. In addition to the normal setup under and around the shelter, several vendors will line the sidewalk that crosses the park. We are growing and spreading our wings. We invite you to take a walk through the park and see what everyone has to offer!

All of the "old faithfuls" are back plus you will see some friendly new faces adding even greater diversity to the products you can purchase on Saturdays at the market. Why not make it a habit to read the weekly market news and write out your shopping list based on who will be vending and what products they will have.

New this year - the market news will feature vendor profiles to help you as our customers get to know more about who we are and the stories behind what we do. Each story will be posted on www.mineralpointmarket.com separate of the weekly news.

This week join us in welcoming new vendors Cafe' 4, Kings Hill Farm and Liz Wyman.

Alpacas of Prairie Station

Shannon Badger will be at the market this Saturday with some warm things to wear for those last cool days of spring. We will also have roving and tools available for needle-felting (warm weather!) projects, which Shannon will be demonstrating. We have recently published a children's book and will have autographed copies available along with our handmade alpaca note cards - perfect for Mothers' Day!

Bures Berry Patch
I just finished picking our asparagus again, what a fantastic addition it has been to our evening meals. We will be picking asparagus everyday now from her on out! Bures Berry Patch will be at market this week with asparagus and pure maple syrup! If you can't make it to market or need something sooner just give us a call at 608-924-1404. Bures Berry Patch offers a wide range of fruits and vegetables. If you have not heard of us before we are famous for our strawberries which will be coming on sometime in June. At the patch you are able to pick your own berries or we can pick them for you, nothing tastes better than a juicy, warm strawberry. Later in the season we offer raspberries, which are another delicious treat from the patch. Then we we will have sweet corn that is perfect for the summer cookout. Fall raspberries will also come out around this time which make this crop doubly-good since we can offer them for an extended period of time. In October, we finish our season at the patch with a fantastic selection of pumpkins of all different shapes and colors as well as gourds, squash and Indian corn. If you would like to learn more about Bures Berry Patch, please introduce yourself to Ed and Kathy at the market, or feel free to give us a call at 608-924-1404, or visit our website at www.buresberrypatch.com. We hope to see you in the patch soon!

Cafe' 4
Scott Spilgers will be at market with coffee drinks including iced coffee and other cold beverages once we get into June, July and August. Cafe' 4 will also offer retail-packaged coffee and two "to be determined" bakery items each market.

Chestnut Hill Studio
I'm returning to market with cards, prints, trivets, tiles, t-shirts and market bags featuring fruits, veggies, flowers and an occasional critter. Stop by and check out my new designs.

Cooks' Woods
Unfortunately, Dave and Barb will not be at market this year. Mother nature put a severe cramp in their syrup production so they have minimal product available for sale. You can visit their website at www.cookswoods.biz for more information.

Driftless Ridge
I'm excited about the market season, this spring has been so nice. I have been planting Sunflowers, Sweet Peas, Basil, Lisianthus, Stocks, Godetia, Statice and Celosia in the hoop house. Outside is Batchlors, Calendula, Scabiosia, Bupleurum, Zinnia and Cosmos so far and all before the 1st of May! My hope is to be at the 3rd or 4th market with fresh flowers. Cara.

Herbs, Spices and More
Bob and his son Mike will be back with their full line of breads, and more. With the new layout you will find Bob and Mike under the shelter where Shooting Star Farm used to be.

Kings Hill Farm
Kings Hill Farm is a certified organic farm located south of Mineral Point and inspired by permaculture (permanent agriculture) ideas. We are a small family farm providing your family with a wide variety of vegetables, small fruits, herbs, mushrooms and flowers. We will be selling at the Mineral Point Market every other week. Joel and Jai Kellum.

Lacey's Lathers Goat Milk Soap
Lacey's Lathers Goat Milk Soap is a creamy soap, leaving your skin with a lotiony feel. It is available most Saturdays at the Mineral Point Market or by order.

Liz Wyman
For those of you that frequented the indoor winter market at The Old Royal Inn you more than likely purchased seafood from Liz. She also was a vendor at the market several years ago with her greenhouse tomatoes. We're pleased that Liz will be rejoining us this season as a vendor. Her tomatoes aren't quite ready but she will have some Bok Choy and Watercress along with a wide variety of seafood. Her selection will include Salmon, Scallops, Tilapia, Lobster, Swordfish, Mahi and Grouper. Liz will be parked on the street down from the visitor center. Make sure to stop by and give Liz a Mineral Point Market welcome!

Magic Light Photography
Stop by the market and take a look as some of my work. I have added several new prints to my collection. I will also have a large selection of hand made greeting cards featuring many of my favorite images. All of my cards are blank inside and are great for any occasion. I also have a selection of bookmarks designed using many of my photos. You can also view my work at
www.magiclightphotography.com. I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday! Thanks, Mike.

Mark and Jennifer Bendorf

Mark and Jennifer will be back at market with their cinnamon rolls, croissants, pecan rolls and more.

Marr's Valley View Farms
Where does time go! How exciting it is for market to be opening this weekend. We were vendors at the indoor winter market through the end of March so we saw many of your over the winter. Our 4 Meat CSA has expanded to 12 months a year keeping us busy during the off-season. In addition to our complete line of nutritional Pork and Black Angus beef products we will be offering Big Butz BBQ Sauce and our own Meatball and Meatloaf seasoning mix as a compliment to our meats at the market. Shooting Star Farm
The Shooting Star Farm market stand will be in a NEW LOCATION this year. As the market has grown, we've moved things about to accommodate more vendors. Several stand will now be found along the sidewalk that runs through the park. Look for us there every week. We are excited about a new season and think it will be the best ever! WE will be harvesting fresh, spring items from our unheated hoophouse and a few from the field. Look for French breakfast and red radishes, salad turnips (mild and delicious with edible greens), heads of lettuce (red, butterhead and green), overwintered spinach (planted last October), rhubarb, and a few herbs. Salad greens need a bit more time since they are all planted outdoors but we should have arugula next week and mixed salad one or two weeks later. See you all Saturday! Rink, Jenny and Charlie.

New vendors are always welcome although if we have a limited amount of spaces for each product category so some may be placed on a waiting list until a spot becomes available. If you know anyone that might enjoy selling at the market or perhaps you yourself would, please contact Jenny Bonde at starfarm@mhtc.net or call 608-967-2319, or myself, Lois Federman, at federman@charter.net or call 608-987-2097.

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point, WI. 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. Rain or Shine!

Vendor Profile - Michael J. Smith - Magic Light Photography

This season the market news will feature vendor profiles to help you as our customers learn more about who we are and the stories behind what we do. I could not have asked for a better opportunity to drive the selection of the first featured vendor than receiving my Wisconsin Trails Spring 2010 issue this week. Paging through the issue, I was stopped by a photo that looked so familiar to me but I could not place why or where. A photo of a young fox, resting its chin on a log, staring directly into my eyes with a sense of relaxation and self-confidence. The photograph filled the page with all its glory. Eventually my eyes moved to the top to read the heading:
WISCONSIN TRAILS 2010 PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS
We asked you to give us your best Wisconsin shots and you submitted nearly 1000 photos - here's a look at the finalist and runners up in each category
Ever so slowly it began to seep back into my mind where I had seen this handsome fellow before and thought to myself - could it be? Visually scrolling to the bottom of the page I was overwhelmed with joy, pride and admiration when I read:
GRAND PRIZE WINNER & WILDLIFE FIRST PLACE - "Fox Kit on Log" - Michael J. Smith
Yes - Mineral Point Markets' own - Mike Smith of Magic Light Photography beat the odds and was the "best of show" out of just under 1000 entries! As I turned the page I thought it just does not get any better than this....or does it? Admiring the first and second place photos in the Scenery category with "amateur photographer envy", I move on to the next page. The photo on the left caught my eye again as if I had seen it before...could it be...visual scroll to the bottom of the page.....
WILDLIFE SECOND PLACE - "Cecropia Moth" - Michael J. Smith
Incredible....just incredible. After admiring the first place winning photo in the People category I again turn the page to find....you guessed it....Michael J. Smith wins Honorable Mention in both the Scenery category with "Lightning Storm" and the Wildlife category with "Bluebird Landing". At this point - I can only sit back and smile as I realize that Mike has won 5 of the 11 awards from a field of nearly 1000 submissions.
Mike and his wife Amy reside in Mineral Point. He is a weekly vendor at the Mineral Point Market although he is at the mercy of the weather as moisture and dampness are not friends of photos, cards, etc. Please congratulate Mike on his achievements when you see him and purchase your very own winning photos!
A bit from Mike:
I am a self-taught photographer, specializing in fine art nature and wildlife. I am a life-long resident of the driftless area of southwest Wisconsin. The drifless area is a part of the state that was not covered by a glacier during the last ice age. The result is a local landscape much different than the rest of the state. The rolling hills and valleys provide a great natural backdrop for photography, and this is where I spend a lot of my free time. There is nothing I find more relaxing than exploring my own "back yard" with my camera, looking for those great photo opportunities.
I love participating in the Mineral Point Market because it gives me an opportunity to share my work with others. Meeting new people form all walks of life and sharing my work at the market has been a great experience for me.
Phone: 608-987-4539

Congratulations Mike - our "buttons are bursting with pride".
