Shooting Star Farm
Last week was an amazing market – lots of vendors and customers and everyone having a good time. Looks like the weather will be great this weekend, too. This is the time of year we start to run out of space on our table with all the crops of summer coming in. This week we may have a few Asian melons to add to our selection. These are an oblong, yellow skinned melon, with crisp, white, sweet flesh. They’re on the small size. Just enough for two when split in half. We should have a more tomatoes than last week (which didn't last long). However, this is probably the worst tomato season we’ve seen. Fortunately the late blight that you may have read about hasn’t shown up on our farm. But cool temperatures coupled with wet, humid weather has lead to a plethora of other bacterial and fungal diseases in our outdoor crop. Luckily we have some tomatoes planted in our unheated greenhouse. These still look very nice. They’ve just been a little slow to ripen, but should be flooding in soon. While you wait, take advantage of what’s bountiful! We still have plenty of summer squash, cucumbers, beets, onions (Italian bottle and sweet yellow), basil, cilantro, eggplant, sweet peppers (elongated Italian and yellow/red Romanian), Swiss chard, kale (curly and Lacinato), fennel, and frisee. We’ll be out of green beans this week, but more next. The spicy greens for our salad mix are very limited this week, so we may have a simple baby lettuce mix instead. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie.

The Old Royal Inn
The Old Royal Inn is cooking up some great local HOT food at The Market this week! Mark will be cooking up a fantastic egg and sausage croissant made to order, right in front of you! He will be using sausage from Marr's Valley View Farms, eggs from Pine Valley Farm and croissants that he makes right here at The Royal. Of course he will have all the regular fare as well including his Famous Cinnamon Rolls, Pecan Rolls, and Raspberry Croissants (made with Bures Berry Patch Berries of course)! Coffee will be all Organic, Fair Trade of course!. Thanks to everyone for their support and patronage, we look forward to seeing you at the market!

Tipi Top Organics
Mike Manogue is back with his incredible fruit - pears and plums - apples coming soon.

New vendors are ALWAYS welcome at the Mineral Point Market! If you know anyone that might enjoy selling at the market or perhaps you yourself would, please contact Jenny Bonde at starfarm@mhtc.net or call 608-967-2319, or Lois Federman at federman@charter.net or call 608-987-2097, for details.

Hope to see you Saturday morning at Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

All Of Us At The Mineral Point Market

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Week 16 - August 22, 2009

Last Saturday was another fast paced market day! Beautiful weather encouraging a large crowd of shoppers. Looks like we'll have "farmers' market appropriate weather" again this week-end. Look forward to seeing you there.

The August Market Basket Drawing winner is Mark Speltz! Congratulations - stop at market this week to pick up your winnings.

Many new topics to cover this week so let's get started:

You may have noticed that we have some new faces vending at the Mineral Point Market which we are thrilled about. Please help us give a Mineral Point welcome to:

Mary Buckhaus with garden produce including zucchini, onions, herbs, green beans.

Mary Gough has returned with sweet corn and other garden items. Mary and her family were vendors a couple years ago. Welcome back!

Mike Manogue of Tipi Top Organics returned for the first time this season with the yummiest pears ever!

Mike Vogel joined us with garden produce and decorative wood items.

Notice a pattern here??? Your name had to begin with "M" to be a new vendor last Saturday.

Hi, my name is Pat Schulist and I am visiting my family in Mineral Point this weekend. While doing so, I thought I would share some of our Organic Potatoes. We have a organic dairy farm north of Stevens Point. I will have Norland Reds, Yukon Golds, Figerlings Silverton Russets and BLUE potatoes available for purchase. Come and enjoy some great tasing potatoes! Thanks. Pat Schulist.

Shake Rag Players want to hear from you! Sam Murn and Ainsley Anderson will be representing Shake Rag Players at the Market this week. Shake Rag players is a community theatre group that has been active in Mineral Point for decades. With the current restoration of the Opera House we are taking the year to reevaluate who we are as a group and how we can have the most positive impact on the community. We are hoping to be able to ask questions of willing market-goers about their interest in community theatre and what they would like to see/receive from Mineral Point's community theatre.

UW-Cooperative Extension Nutrition Education Program will be at the market this week. We will be featuring the recipe Ham Pasta Salad. This recipe is a good one to use when you have a few vegetables of any and every kind. Stop by and see Julie. Sample the Salad and then purchase your veggie to make the salad at home.

Thank you too all you hardy souls who braved Saturday’s rain. The market was small, but the turn-out was great. We’ve had ample rain this month (a bit much, really). Plus some pretty strong winds whipped through here last Sunday, causing a bit of damage to crops. The pounding rain and humidity have been hard on the salad greens. I’m not sure if we’ll have any this weekend, but we’ll try! Items that are in really good supply include beans, green and gold zucchini, cucumbers, beets, Swiss chard, eggplant, onions (sweet white and Italian bottle reds), and basil. The tomatoes are finally starting to ripen. We’ll have some red ones from the hoop house and field, some mixed cherry tomato pints, paste tomatoes, and a few heirloom varieties. Other things to look for include fennel, collards, kale, parsley, oregano, thyme, and sweet green and yellow peppers. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie

A little heat would be a good thing to bring on the summer crops. They certainly are slow this year. We did have a few peppers and eggplants last week, and may have a few more this week. These are the first fruits on the plant that we normally remove in order to let the plant get bigger. Salad mix will be back along with baby arugula. The cool weather has allowed us to continue to have collards, kale and a bit of broccoli late into July. You may have noticed two types of cucumbers at our stand: slicing cukes and Diva cukes. The slicing cukes are old-fashioned, delicious cucumbers. The Diva variety is like an “English” or “Middle Eastern” –type cucumber with a very mild, no-peel skin. Try both! We’ll also have lots of summer squash (green, yellow, and patty pan), bunched beets, bunched sweet onions and Italian bottle onions (a.k.a torpedo onions), Swiss chard, green beans, basil, parsley, and lettuce. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, & Charlie

The Old Royal Inn
We are glad to be open again and back at the market! We will be at the market each week with our cinnamon rolls, pecan rolls, traditional croissants, chocolate filled croissants and coffee. A change this year is that Mark, who makes all these goodies, will be at the market instead of Jennifer selling the rolls, at least for a while. This will give Jennifer more time with our new baby boy, born on Good Friday. (Which makes for a total of four children for us!) Which is also why we have opened the restaurant up for only Friday Nights and Saturday Mornings. Thanks to everyone for their support and patronage, we look for ward to seeing you at the market! Also, look for our 2 oldest boys to be selling special cookies at the market that they have made with dad while they learn how to bake this summer! Mark. 608-987-4530.

They will make a perfect mother's day card! I will also have a selection of matted prints in various sizes available. They will look great as a decoration for your home, or they make great gifts as well. New products from last fall are bookmarks. I have 10 different designs all featuring my photos. They make great gifts! I also have a few 2009 calendars available at a discount.

If you can't wait for the Market on Saturday, you will find my cards and a couple of framed prints available at the Collections shop on High Street in Mineral Point. I have a larger selection of both framed, and matted prints available at Phoebe's Nest, also on High St. in Mineral Point. Shooting Star Farm
We’ve had plenty of rain and good weather for harvesting. The tomato crop is a little behind, but we have lots and lots of other items. Green beans are in full swing! We had lots last week and should have plenty again this week. In the cooking greens category, look for collards, kale, and Swiss chard. Beet greens count, too. If you don’t like cooking the greens, we’ll have plenty of roots in lots of colors! Napa cabbage might be considered a cooking green, but we like it raw and chopped into salads. Other salad items include lots of lettuce – oak leaf, green leaf, red leaf, red Batavian, and green bibb. Unfortunately, there won’t be salad mix this week. We’re in between patches but should have more in a week. We’ll have mini onions, both red and white, and possibly some Italian bottle onions and sweet white onions. These are fresh with the greens attached. Other miscellaneous items include basil, parsley, oregano, thyme, a bit of broccoli, the first few eggplants and peppers, and lots of green and yellow zucchini and cucumbers. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, and Charlie
