Week 5 - May 30, 2009

The weather co-operated - we had market basket drawing registration and the lucky winner is ~
Jean Hanson of Mineral Point! Congratulations Jean - we'll see you at market this Saturday to collect your winnings.

I have great news - Cara Mesman from Driftless Ridge will be back this week with the beginning of the season flowers!

This week's vendor lineup is as follows:

Bures Berry Patch
Bures Berry Patch hopes to be at market this week with more of its delicious asparagus. If you would like to place an order for some asparagus or rhubarb just give us a call at 608-924-1404 and we will run out and pick you some fresh from the patch. Bures Berry Patch offers a wide range of fruits and vegetables. If you have not heard of us before we are famous for our strawberries which will be coming on sometime in June. At the patch you are able to pick your own berries or we can pick them for you, nothing tastes better than a juicy, warm strawberry. Later in the season we offer raspberries, which are another delicious treat from the patch. Then we will have sweet corn that is perfect for the summer cookout. Fall raspberries will also come out around this time which make this crop doubly-good since we can offer them for an extended period of time. In October, we finish our season at the patch with a fantastic selection of pumpkins of all different shapes and color as well as gourds, squash, and Indian corn. If you would like to learn more about Bures Berry Patch please introduce yourself to Ed and Kathy at the market, or feel free to give us a call at 608-924-1404, or visit our website at http://www.buresberrypatch.com/. We hope to see you in the patch soon!

Welcome back to the market everyone! I'm very excited to be back to the market this year with a selection of my photography. I have been keeping busy creating new images over the last several months. Again this year I will have a large selection of photo greeting cards at the market. All of the cards are hand made and signed by me. They are blank in side and can be used for any occasion. They will make a perfect mother's day card! I will also have a selection of matted prints in various sizes available. They will look great as a decoration for your home, or they make great gifts as well. New products from last fall are bookmarks. I have 10 different designs all featuring my photos. They make great gifts! I also have a few 2009 calendars available at a discount. If you can't wait for the Market on Saturday, you will find my cards and a couple of framed prints available at the Collections shop on High Street in Mineral Point. I have a larger selection of both framed, and matted prints available at Phoebe's Nest, also on High St. in Mineral Point. Shooting Star Farm
We spent a busy week getting our tomatoes in (on Memorial Day), transplanting summer squash and lettuces, and seeding things before the rain. It was a nice surprise to have bok choy ready last week. We keep it covered with floating row covers to exclude the pests and help speed growth in the spring. The wind blew off some of the row cover and there it was, ready for harvest. We’ll have more this week. Other items include leaf and bibb lettuces, salad mix, baby arugula, radishes, rhubarb, spring turnips, and spinach (new spring crop). See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, & Charlie

Ranum's 1887 Brand Honey
Ranum's 1887 Brand will be at market this week with honey, granola, and soap. We will look forward to seeing you! Mark and Annie.

The Old Royal Inn
We are glad to be open again and back at the market! We will be at the market each week with our cinnamon rolls, pecan rolls, traditional croissants, and chocolate filled croissants. A change this year is that Mark, who makes all these goodies, will be at the market instead of Jennifer selling the rolls, at least for a while. This will give Jennifer more time with our new baby boy, born on Good Friday. (Which makes for a total of four children for us!) Which is also why we have opened the restaurant up for only Friday Nights and Saturday Mornings. Thanks to everyone for their support and patronage, we look for ward to seeing you at the market! Also, look for our 2 oldest boys to be selling special cookies at the market that they have made with dad while they learn how to bake this summer! Mark. 608-987-4530.

The Spotted Dog
I will be at the market with coffee and pastries!! The Spotted Dog.

Shooting Star Farm
In the spring it’s difficult to get early salad mix unless you plant under cover. Our salad mix is made up of baby greens (arugula, cress, mizuna, etc) and baby lettuces. The outdoor plantings of baby greens always outpace the outdoor plantings of baby lettuce. So this year we seeded a bed of baby lettuce in our unheated hoophouse. Turns out it was ready to harvest last Friday, which pleased many of our salad mix lovers. We have more for this week, too. By the 23rd we’ll have baby lettuces ready for harvest from outdoors, and salad mix season will begin in earnest. A new item this week will be heads of lettuce - also from the hoophouse. Quantities will be limited on these because many still require more growing time. But we’ll have good quantities of red radishes, salad turnips, spinach (lots), baby arugula, and rhubarb. If you’re going to the plant sale in Dodgeville, be sure to stop by market afterwards! See you Saturday. Rink, Jenny, and Charlie.

Cook's Woods
Our maple syrup production this spring was slightly less than average, but our maple open house event attendance was way above average. Many people came to see how we make our maple syrup and sample some maple recipes. Neither Barn nor I will be attending the market this week, but you can expect one of us to be there later this month. In the mean time, you may check out our website, http://www.cookswoods.biz/ where our prices are listed along with our contact information so you may order ahead and we will bring your order to the next market that we attend, or arrange for delivery or pickup at our farm. Dave Cook.

Green Woman Herbs

Magic Light Photography
If you're in the Platteville area, I have two pieces on display at the Badger Brothers Coffee Shop. I also have two pieces on display at the Roundtree Gallery. You can also view my work at http://www.magiclightphotography.com/. I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday! Mike.

Shooting Star Farm
Wow, what a great turnout for the first market. It was great seeing everyone and getting back in the swing of things. For this week we’ll continue to have over-wintered spinach and rhubarb from outside. Red and French Breakfast radishes as well as salad turnips – those yummy mild, white turnips that are delicious raw or cooked – will be harvested from our unheated
greenhouse. Baby arugula from the field may be ready, but I can’t make any promises. For those of you ichin’ for salad mix, we’ll definitely have some for the 16th. See you Saturday! Rink, Jenny, & Charlie

The Spotted Dog
I will be at the market with coffee and pastries!! The Spotted Dog.
